RT @TheDemocrats Mitt Romney disses a beloved local bakery in Pittsburghand 7-Eleven. #cookiegate http://pic.twitter.com/tRQsSiKt
@TheDemocrats Uh oh. Pittsburgh takes their pastries VERY seriously. And their guns. And their Jesus. In that order. And...that's about it.
9h pussinglitter pussinglitter ? @pussinglitter
@TheDemocrats Dumb faux pas dissing a place loved by Pittsburgh voters, but shows Romney's out of touch thinking 7-11 is a bakery.
9h Richard DeCamp Richard DeCamp ? @richdecamp
@TheDemocrats Bethel Bakery is one of if not the best bakery in Pittsburgh. Bad move, Mitt.

(85,996 posts). . . rather than sort out all of the rhetoric from candidates and supporters. I think these anecdotal events and occurrences provide insight into just who we're electing, since most people who will cast their vote don't know diddly about who Romney is. That doesn't necessarily mean they will base their vote on one ignorant put-down of a beloved bakery, but it just might make the difference in a close district to someone who still has a bad taste in their mouth about this come election day. It really doesn't matter if you, personally, think they should have the opportunity to vote or not.

(17,301 posts)I think voting based on if your favorite bakery was dissed or not, is equal to voting for a guy because you think you can have a beer with him. All the media said that's why the bushes were selected.
By the way, there are several people who would hate Romney for dissing those cookies and they will probably not vote for him...now. They are the owners of Bethel Bakery.

He is simply out of touch.

(28 posts)millions of the unwashed don't vote and Mitt connects more with house holds with income of $100K+ and they do vote.
cookie gate is pure nonsense, sure he is out of touch but cookie dissing is a silly way to base a vote.
geckosfeet
(9,644 posts)I understand the conceptual leap may be difficult, but that is the underlying cause for cookie gate. Not the cookies per say. The cookies are symbolic of his out-of-touchness. As are his many campaign gaffes and policy statements geared towards making the rich richer and the poor poorer.

. . . it serves as a classic reinforcement of an established perception; in this case, that Romney is an upper-crusty and out-of-touch with most Americans (this time in Pittsburgh, a locality that he can ill-afford to offend).

Has resulted in the leaders and government we have today.

(26,060 posts)An IQ test? A religious test? The same people who ran against John Kerry and called him a flip flopper are now with a candidate that changes his mind from minute to minute. People vote for all kinds of reasons and it's not for any of us to say what is and what is not a valid reason but for only one side to decide not to exploit that would be the height of absurdity.

Frankly, if this gaffe, while insignificant on its own terms, is personal enough to cut through the Republican spin and get some more people to see how vapid and out of touch Rmoney is, I'll take it!
schlagehundenancee
(28 posts)do you really care what another person eats or does not eat and should running a nation depend on electing people who agree with your food choices?
Are you saying Americans are that ignorant?
blue neen
(12,321 posts)His campaign staff (the ones who chose the food selection) set it up so Romney could be seen as connecting to "regular folks".
As usual, he came off as being out of touch. He does NOT relate to average Americans.
Romney is always saying he's a "small business guy." Once again, he proves that he just doesn't get it by dissing a popular small business.
JHB
(37,160 posts)It should have been a run of the mill political meet-and-greet, and he managed to fart on a bit of local pride. Not a big thing by itself, but it does underscore how out of touch he is.
I don't think that's too hard a concept to grasp. Are you saying people can't understand a wider context than just the cookies?
leftynyc
(26,060 posts)is by the person who doesn't think that examples of things that feed a narrative are important. And this cookie thing feeds the narrative of romney being out of touch with the "everyman/woman".

Romney was here because he really needs Pennsylvania, and he screwed it up on his first day.
It's too late for the spinmasters.

(37,160 posts)I'm pretty sure that some of the companies offering the products and services you are using to post here "support pubs" to the same degree that the bakery "supported" pubs (most of us would define that level of "support" as "event catering" .

But since they hold meeting for the elephants please never, ever go have a meal there.
By the way, let me tell you something, your hate of pubs is no different than the hate of libs at our mirror site.
That my friend is a problem. Oh and there is more to that big picture that you are painting there, but can't seem to comprehend.
