Source: Reuters
Russian state-controlled TV has broadcast what it called "sensational" photographs, which it said supported Moscow's theory that Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was shot down by a Ukrainian fighter jet.
... Since being aired by Channel One, the photographs have met with widespread scepticism.
Andrei Menshenin, a commentator for independent Russian radio station Ekho Moskvy, called the TV report a "pseudo-sensation", and said the angle of attack indicated by the photographs did not correspond to the location of the damage.
Bellingcat, a British investigative journalism website, described the photographs as "a crude fabrication", highlighting what it said were several inconsistencies, which included signs that the photos had been partly compiled from historical Google Earth imagery dating from 2012.

(35,356 posts)Channel One broadcasts in Russian for Russians. I do believe it's the one that had Yarosh winning back in the summer, not Poroshenko, and by the same amount that the virus that had infected the Ukrainian election servers was going to report had the virus not been caught.
Wasn't it the "child crucified" station, as well?
However, the counterreports will not reach Channel One's audience. It is more "proof" that the West and Ukrainians are unfairly ganging up on Russia and are themselves evil. The country can take a lot and do a lot of bad if most of the populace believes something like that.
Take Soviet times, when the populace was fairly well convinced that they had the highest standard of living on Earth, had the freest press, etc. More than one Russian then was convinced that the US was about to explode in mass riots and chuck off the bonds of capitalism because of the millions of starving people, the illiteracy rate, the lack of opportunity. By the late '80s the exchange faculty I knew were really quite cynical about it all. They showed up and lived like paupers, and during the "stranovedenie" courses would preach the official party line. They had the highest standard of living, the best consumer goods, the most open society. Then, a few days before they went home, they'd go on a massive shopping spree and buy electronics, clothes, luxury foods. "Because," they'd say at their farewell parties, "it's hard to find enough electronics or clothes of any quality, and what I'm taking back is better than anything available in the Soviet Union." And they were shopping at K-Mart and Safeway.
When faith died, the USSR died. Now the faith is that all their problems result from Western plots, corruption, decadence, and the outcome of all those Western plots is humiliation. They are the center of our world, they believe. Which means that in a warped sense the West is again the center of their world.
