General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDoes anybody actually expect anything to come of the SS/Ted Negent meeting?
They'll chit chat for a few minutes, emerge from the meeting all buddy-buddy and the SS will drop the matter, claiming that it was somehow not a "real threat".
Don't hold your breath.

(95,247 posts)But the open file makes subsequent complaints loom larger, and future contacts more serious. The fellow is incapable of restraining his mouth, and he has weapons, as well as an extant government certification of some degree of mental disturbance, namely his draft evasion and record of heavy drug use: this is just the sort of combination that a body-guard corps is pretty much required to take real notice of.

(22,143 posts)The one thing he does not have is a record of heavy drug use. He's always been very anti-drug. His drug of choice is underage girls.
Unless, of course, he's lying about it and you know something about it that I don't.

(95,247 posts)I do not believe the wretch, at least not concerning the late sixties and into the early seventies. He is fucked up mentally to a point hard to reach without outside assistance....

(22,143 posts)But I've yet to meet someone that dropped acid who didn't become a better person for it.
But you may well be correct, sir. We really do only have his word to go on.

(8,556 posts)Probably because the SS has to appear to take all threats seriously and thus can't let such a public one slide. I don't think anybody really believes that Ted Nugent is a threat to the president. Could also be that Obama's team thinks a display of power over a RW figure and Romney surrogate is beneficial to his campaign, i.e. a 'My name is Andrew Shepherd and I AM the president' moment.

(25,251 posts)he has an NRA fan base of crazies that listen to him, idolize him and would probably act on his words. That's what scares me about Nugent. Nugent himself is a coward but his fans might not be.
What I worry about too is that he will probably come out of this meeting with the Secret Service saying that his rights of Free Speech are being trampled on and he'll use this incident of the SS meeting as a way of showing his fan base that he is right in what he says about this government.
I don't think we've heard the last of Ted Nugent and his inciting rantings.
RZM
(8,556 posts)That's a given. He's already said that he's a 'black Jew at a Nazi-Klan rally.' So it's pretty clear he sees himself as a victim here.
As for his followers, if it wasn't him, some other dumbass would be saying the same shit. Of course, this other dumbass probably couldn't play 'Wango Tango' on the guitar

(25,251 posts)they probably would not be as in the public eye as Nugent is or have the following that he does. He's somewhat of an NRA RW Nutjob icon. As such - he's probably more dangerous than most.
RZM
(8,556 posts)That doesn't work either. He's a stupid ass. Let him be a stupid ass. It's not like he's the only celebrity who's full of shit.

(22,308 posts)I honestly believe there is something wrong with the guy. He isn't just strange or stupid, I think the guy has an actual problem with his brain.
Maybe he was just born that way, I don't know. If he wasn't gifted with the ability to play a guitar (the guy really can play) he would most probably be a night time stock boy at someplace like a Walmart. He isn't presentable in public so you couldn't let him work when a customer might ask him a question.
I don't know if the Secret Service will consider him an actual threat but they just might profile this guy as deranged enough to either try something or pay someone else to do it for him.
I doubt that anything will come from him just talking shit but they just might decide to keep an eye on him from now on.

(3,118 posts)His statement was bizarre but it can be taken in a different manner that doesn't equal a threat to the president. His being dead could be taken to mean he'd kill himself. His being in jail could be taken to mean he'd commit an act of violence, vandalism, mayhem, etc., other than violence towards the president. When I first read the statement I didn't take it as a threat to anyone specific.
He's wacky but all this uproar seems like histrionics to me. But, hey, that's just my opinion.
