Why This Is Important
I'm a proven patriot that was hunting down Communists when I was 18 and 19 - when Nugent was starting his career as a Chicken-Hawk Draft Dodger!
While Nugent was practicing killing bunny rabbits and varmits - I was teaching the South Vietnamese how to kill enemy Communist T-54 Tanks!
While Nugent was peeing his pants - I was protecting the people and the peace, at great risk to my life with REAL AMERICAN MEN!
While Nugent was playing with ponies - I was in the U. S. Cavalry riding out of the sky into a destiny with death!
I fought for the honor of my country and regardless of who sits in the oval office respect for that office. The President of the United States of America deserves respect regardless of your political affiliation.
I am asking the true patriots in our country to stand with me and demand that REO Speedwagon and Styx drop Ted Nugent from their concert series.
Ted has gone nuts and needs to come in off the road to get in touch with what really matters. Threatening our President has gone too far!

(8,964 posts)What really happened to Ted Nugent is that he got tarred and feathered. First off, he exercised EXTREME-ly bad judgment by belly flopping into the vat of tar. Once he crawled out, he apparently got a bit hungry for his daily ration of raw flesh and proceeded to run amuck through the chicken coup. And he came out looking kinda bad for his self-directed efforts. Of course, the only way for Ted to "save face" was to turn the tables and blame others for his own reprehensible actions.

(25,415 posts)That is what I grew up on. The Styx, Reo Speedwagon stuff is a bit before my time. Is it embarrassing to admit that I went to a Poison concert when I was 14?

(8,812 posts)OK, so it's just some dude with a petition, but must we defend brutal American imperialism in order to condemn someone who has threatened the president with violence?
meanit
(455 posts)Although the OP is a bit heavy on the imperial stuff, I think it's worded to point out the hypocrisy to those who think that Nugent is some kind of an " American warrior patriot", when just the opposite is true.

(20,136 posts)I fully support seeing chicken hawks get called out on their bluster and swagger by people who actually have something to back it up.
It's kind of like that "Beyond Scared Straight" show where the punk faux-tough-guy teenagers come face-to-face with actual, hardened criminals and gangs, and piss their pants.

(13,616 posts)So frankly Styx withotu Dennis Deyoung is a joke. He was their main songwriter, the one who made all those concept albums the rest of the band "hates" even though they still play all those hits.

(12,723 posts)Saw them back in 76 I think it was. Truly a great show. I remember that little shit Tommy Shaw running up and standing on the monitors so people could see him.
Tommy Shaw used to do a bit wile working with Nugent making fun of DeYoung and the whole Paradise Theater thing. Reall asshole shit.
Shaw has no class.

(12,545 posts)Having spent a year in rice paddies and rubber plantations creating havoc and mayhem for people who neither threatened nor harmed us, I can categorically say Nugent would have experienced a serious "accident" after a few days in Vietnam.
Although I disagreed with the war, I served as the alternative was prison.
Luck played a major role in my survival. Next week will mark the 44th year of my return from the sunny shores of Vietnam.
Hell, Nugent shit his pants because he was worried about being drafted. Everything changes once the shooting starts.

(7,875 posts)He's actually doing a simultaneous solo tour-
The humor here is when you look at the disparity between the venues he's playing with REO Speedwagon & Styx vs his solo gigs...
The Midwest Rock 'n Roll Express Tour is playing prestigious places like Red Rocks Ampetheatre and other big pavilions. His solo tour is playing county fairs and biker rallies.

REO Speedwagon - Golden Country
Lyrics:
Golden country your face is so red
With all of your money your poor can be fed
You strut around and you flirt with disaster
Never really carin' just what comes after
Well your blacks are dyin' but your back is still turned
And your freaks are cryin' but your back is still turned
You better stop your hidin or your country will burn
The time has come for you my friend
To all this ugliness we must put an end
Before we leave we must make a stand
Mortgage people you crawl to your homes
Your security lies in your bed of white foam
You act concerned but then why turn away
When a lady was raped on your doorstep today
Well your blacks are cryin' but your back is still turned
And your freaks are dyin' but your back is still turned
You better stop your hidin or your country will burn
The time has come for you my friend
To all this ugliness we must put an end
Before we leave we must make a stand, oh yeah......

(14,524 posts)As you can see from my reply below, this song came into my mind immediately after reading the OP. The sentiment of Golden Country is even more relevant today than it was when they played it 4 decades ago. Thanks again for posting.

(53,339 posts)...some of us were invited every year to speak about the war to a high school class on 'Major Events of the 20th Century.'
On my first visit, I noticed 'VIETNAM' spelled out across the back wall of the classroom in letters 2-3 feet high. Then I learned that the letters were made of 58,000 straightpins the students had spent 5 minutes each day putting in.
The next year, the back wall was covered with a collage of 58,000 faces the students had cut from magazine photos.
The teacher, it turned out, had been a VN War protester and draft dodger. For refusing to report when drafted, he was sentenced to 2 years in prison. I can't remember now whether he served the full term or just 18 months, but he did time in prison.
Our group of VN combat vets had enormous respect for that teacher. He accepted the consequences, and sacrificed, to honor his principles.
To use a Vietnamese expression, Nugent isn't worth that teacher's little fingernail.

(23,867 posts)I didn't know if I'd be willing to go to jail. I wasn't going to Vietnam though. Before I got drafted, the war ended. But it was frightening. Now that I ready what you had to say, I can see how 2 years in jail would actually be liberating. I would pay that price now, if I had to.
I also admire your willingness to see beyond your own ego and experience.

(14,524 posts)... and suggested to REO that they listen to their own song, "Golden Country" off REO TWO if they have any question as to why we are upset. I've quite literally been to more REO concerts than I can count and started listening to them before "Ridin' The Storm Out" was even recorded.
