(16,113 posts)Either the owners (I'm guessing it's a franchise) have decided to raise prices to pay for this community service, and pass that cost along to other customers, which is completely within their right, or they have decided to pay for it out of their own profits. I guess a third possibility is that they make sandwiches out of the food that they are about to throw out, so they're basically donating their "expiring inventory" rather than trashing it.

(5,917 posts)in cleveland there was a place that used to give free meals to the homeless and i saw, nearly everytime i passed it, city vehicles and rta vehicles would park on the next street to the south cut north thru the parking lot and go in come back with a styrofoam container of food hop in their cars and chow down. it was such a disgrace.

(57,936 posts)If I leave a bag of food somewhere -- say a bag of canned goods -- I can be pretty sure that the person who picks it up needs it.
So what if they also have to have a car to drive to work, so what if they have a pretty good-paying job. I don't know what pressure they are under. Maybe the wife or a child has an expensive illness. Maybe they are taking care of their parents. Who knows? Why should I be concerned.
Generally, in America, people don't ask for free food (other than tastes in the grocery store) unless they really need it -- not unless the food is part of a celebration or some promotion or social event.
Americans generally don't "steal" food unless they need it. That is my view.

(5,604 posts)In fact I know a few personally that have good jobs yet would certainly stoop so low just get something free. Arrogant, self centred, self entitled assholes.

(14,337 posts)does it really matter? A homeless person would be far better, but in anybody's stomach is better than a garbage can.

(10,287 posts)food i am unlikely to require proof of need
i would say
who wants something to eat?
sometimes things like this are not about the served but the server
why would i care who got it when my intention is to feed the hungry?
now someone who doesnt have need and still takes has their own self to deal with
leftyohiolib
(5,917 posts)the sign said free meal to the homeless. the intention is to help the homeless not ppl who can feed themselves. sign doesnt say free meal to anyone who is hungry. his intention and it's his intention we're talking about not yours, is to feed the needy not the able. but i like you idea of a place that gives out free food to everyone, i'm in.

(10,287 posts)someone giving out free food is getting a better paycheck for it than money
there usually is a reason they give and the giving is the important part
not the getting
thats what i meant
we have a place here 'the daily bread' that offers lunch and dinner to anyone who hungers and the workers get no pay yet they are the best paid people on earth
i cook all day for pay but the best meal i do each year is when i volunteer and i imagine that feeling is what this businesswoman was going for
i am jealous because i can only do it a few times a year and she does it everyday

(14,337 posts)They cannot be kept until the next day. We did this when I worked in the school cafeteria. Throw it out, or give it away? Better to give it to someone who needs it, than throw it in the garbage.
I have heard of restaurants that do this. A homeless shelter will come and pick up the food.

(23,973 posts)In dealing with donated perishable food products, all it takes is one person to say they got sick, and they are going to sue, to ruin it for everyone ele glad to get the free food.
Some people are just shits, and always are looking for a way to play an angle.
It happens less now that perishable products get discarded instead of donated.
Got the t-shirt.

(23,156 posts)Panera (a St. Louis based soup and salad and sandwich chain) at the end of the day, and about fifteen minutes before actual closing, a truck from a local food bank pulled up, and the staff handed bags stuffed with unsold rolls, cookies, and so on to that person. I was amazed, as I'd never seen that kind of thing before, but what a great way to pass food on to those who need it.

(7,093 posts)I heard from them a few years back. However, It could also be other organization following the same model. I always thought it was a great idea that instead of putting everything in the dumpsters, might as well give it away to those who need it.
DefenseLawyer
(11,101 posts)has a policy of "looking the other way" when they put out their unsold food at the end of the day and that people know this and show up to cart off the stuff nightly. I'm not sure where she heard that so I don't know it that's actually true or not.

(1,486 posts)so are all the groceries in my area even some of the really small corner markets. This pantry feeds families that have food insecurity, most have jobs but don't make enough to feed their families. Homeless people have no where to cook food so they must go to a soup kitchen that prepares meals.
