Tea Party unhappy in Mississippi

Tea Party blames Lt. Governor for failed immigration bill

Mississippi Tea Party representatives Tuesday blamed Lt. Governor Tate Reeves for assigning House Bill 488 to a committee where it died.

The group gave Reeves an 'F' on their legislative report card. "Lt. Governor Reeves' actions continue to make Mississippi a sanctuary state for illegal immigrants," Mississippi Tea Party spokesman Dr. Rodney Hunt said. "I think that he had no intention of delivering any enforcement legislation to the Senate floor for a vote."

Immigration reform topped the Mississippi Tea Party's list for lawmakers to tackle this year. Immigrant rights supporters said they were relieved that the bill died, but they said they did not expect the issue to go away.

The Tea Party said they will work on a new bill for next year. Immigrant rights supporters said they were looking to get a neutral study done on the effects of similar legislation.

Republicans won control of both houses last election so the teabaggers were optimistic that their immigration law would sail through. It had been blocked in the past by Democratic control of the Senate.

Doesn't sound like they plan on giving up however. Both sides know they will be back again next year.

All very true. These anti-immigrant laws only seem to pass in republican-run states, so it's nice to pampango Apr 2012 #3

This is where the Republican Party splinters. On one side, you have socially conservative folks with a large component that is frankly anti-immigrant, and on the other side, you have the wealthy in the state that control the legislative process.

The wealthiest interests want to be able to exploit the labor of illegal immigrants. It's good for increasing profit margins while still utilizing the same amount of labor. If you want to pay farm hands less than a livable wage, you need the illegal immigrants. You can't do that if people are fleeing your state for fear of being arrested and/or reported to ICE for being illegal immigrants. Alabama is having that problem next door.

see them splintering and fighting among themselves when they control both houses and the governor's office in states like Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia. If we're lucky all the teabaggers who helped elect so many GOP state legislators and governors will get disillusioned and crawl back into a hole somewhere.

And no teabagger is leaving their lawn chair to scrub toilets. Wouldn't trust them to do a decent job of it either.
