Gary Peters wins U.S. Senate race
Democrats were so confident of victory in the Senate race, in fact, that Peters became the only Democratic U.S. Senate nominee in the final weeks of the campaign to welcome President Barack Obama his disapproval ratings high into Detroit for a rally the weekend before the election.
Obama was on Detroit radio on "The Mildred Gaddis Show" on WCHB (1200 AM/99.9 FM) on Monday and on "Afternoon Mix with Frankie Darcell" on WXMD Mix 92.3 FM Tuesday, urging voters to turnout and vote for Peters as well as Schauer.

Thanks to DU'er James48 in the "Latest Breaking News" thread - "MICHIGAN: Breaking News Gary Peters defeats Terri Lynn Land in race for U.S. Senate" - http://www.democraticunderground.com/1014936420
Maybe instead of running away from the Obama record of success, embracing it might have helped?
Well, it did here in Michigan.
Thanks, Obama!

DETROIT (AP) - Democrat Brenda Lawrence has won the U.S. House seat from the 14th District.
The popular Southfield mayor defeated a little-known Republican challenger and two other candidates in Tuesdays election.
The 59-year-old Lawrence was gubernatorial candidate Virg Berneros running mate in 2010. She has been Southfields mayor since 2001 and also served on the city council.
The Republican Party all but ceded this years general election to the Democrats by placing a political unknown, Pontiac resident Christina Barr, on the ballot.

(1,850 posts)Land was so far behind for so long that the R's pull their $$$ weeks ago. I can't remember the last time I saw a Land ad.
Obama's support was irrelevant. If he had had an effect on GOTV, maybe Snyder wouldn't have won, at least not by as much.

if the voters went to the polls to vote for Peters, do you think they would have left the others races blank? I would have thought they would just mark the straight "D" ticket. Unless they were making a statement about the candidates abandoning the President . . .

(10,559 posts)I also have a very nice story about his dad, Sam Bernstein, which really goes to show "all politics is local."
A Very Long Time Ago (seriously), back when I was Very Young, I was looking for a job to pay my bills. This was back in the 1980s, and if I wasn't a teenager, I was very close to it. I applied for a position at Mr. Bernstein's law firm in a low level position, and was interviewed by him. He talked with me, and then asked one of those "defining moments of your life" questions:
"Why do you want this low level position, when you could be doing so much more?"
Well, to be frank, the answer was "because I need to pay my bills" but it was the first time someone who wasn't a family member had actually looked at me and asked that question.
I did not take college seriously until the mid 1990s, but I remain grateful Mr. Bernstein Sr. asked that question, because it is one that has come back time and again in the years since.
The job stuff worked out, too - he was right about that, and my IT career became "real" to me shortly thereafter. (Back then it was called "MIS" - lol!)
They seem like a nice family; I do worry they will take a "hit" out on me if I am able to lower infant morbidity rates though! (joke!)
