When I lived in Seattle I went to this parish. Good for them!

The congregation at Seattles Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church gave the Rev.. Tim Clark a standing ovation Sunday when he announced that the parish would not gather signatures for a referendum to repeal same-sex marriage.
The parish became the sixth in Seattle to opt out of the petition drive for Referendum 74 that has been endorsed and foisted on parishes by Archbishop J. Peter Sartain.
I am happy to report that Our Lady of the Lake parish-oners have been overwhelmingly and, thus far, unanimously supportive of the decision I made NOT to gather signatures in support of this Referendum, Clark wrote in response to an e-mail.
The standing ovation experienced during one of the Masses says less about me and much more about the health of this parish. I only wished the archbishop could have experienced the sustained applause the sensus fidelium of the people. He needs to listen to this voice. That is my prayer.

I am an atheist though I grew up Catholic and was fortunate to have liberal nuns as teachers. We do the good ones a big injustice when we broad-brush smear Catholics as a whole when so many are as liberal & kind-hearted as they come.

(23,763 posts)I was educated in both Frankfurt, Germany and also in Tacoma and had very liberal nuns (when it came to social policy) they sure didn't mind whacking my behind when I got out of line, but much of my liberal/political thought comes from the foundation that they shared in religion and history classes as a child! (25,183 posts)but you're right, there are a lot of people who still cling to the Catholic faith who have their hearts in the right place, even though their minds are not totally free.

(25,183 posts)who, like me, was formerly a Catholic and is now an atheist. If my description of that transformation as being free is offensive, perhaps you should consider what motivated it.

(44 posts)Every time I read something like this it gives me hope knowing that there really are good people out there. And I agree that no one should smear a whole religion because some of the crazy leaders say things that are hypocritical. Maybe this can show people that you can be religious and think for yourself as well. Or maybe not. Peace.

The parish my family belonged to is sadly not on the list. Shouldn't surprise me since the pastor told my parents they couldn't attend my brother's wedding because it was an Episcopalian ceremony (not that they listened).

(62,683 posts)(I'm 59 now) and on the ballot was an initiative to make it illegal to discriminate against gays. The church said to support that, it was the Christian thing to do. I'm happy to hear NE Seattle is still doing the right thing!

But good. They've broke from the top-down obedience the hierarchy demanded.
