I was taught conservative things in high school

Like Jimmy Carter ruined America and Reagan was the hero. That capitalism was great while socialism meant that the country was going to shit. I can't believe the awful things they were telling me in school. Luckily I had a good judgment and ignored those lies and joined DU. Thank you everybody for showing me what being a real democrat is about!

Today's students should not be tsught that Bush was a bad president and that Obama is a good president. I don't want my kids to have any idea of the political leanings of any high school teacher.

I taught 20th Century US/World history for 30 years in HS.

I didn't have to tell them Reagan was a disaster.... I just showed them everything... from the Iran-Contra affair to the tax hikes to the crash of '87 & '89... the growing mental confusion....

I was fair... talked about how Ronnie made us feel better about ourselves... if we were white. I tried to be fair.

You present the whole picture, and kids who are ready to learn come up with the obvious answer.

Socialism...? My kids at least learned what it was. And what it wasn't, too.

They understood that "socialist" FDR kept the country together with "socialist" programs that saved capitalism. They were at least exposed to the idea that socialism isn't antithetical to capitalism.

but, when you think about it, many if not most of us were taught that socialism is bad, and that capitalism is good.

For some essays they sponsored through the school that you could do for extra credit (and cash prizes). I didn't need it, but I got a kick out of shoving my opinion down the throat of others. One subject was, "Should Schools Teach Morality," - my answer was yes and no - basic morality has to be taught but ultimately it was the parents' responsibility, and "Should Flag Burning Be Illegal?" I was the only one who said no.
