Mitt Romney to Mothers: Want dignity? 'You need to go to work'

Mitt Romney to Mothers: Want dignity? 'You need to go to work'
By Kalli Joy Gray
April 16, 2012

Last week, when Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen said that Ann Romney had never worked a day in her life, Republicans thought they had finally stumbled upon an issue they could exploit to counter the accusation that they are waging a war on women—and to do something about that scary 20-point gender gap they refuse to believe is real. By insisting that Rosen was attacking mothers, Republicans could seize this shiny object to declare that it is Democrats, not Republicans, who do not value women and the unpaid work they do. The choice to stay home with one's children is the most dignified choice a woman can make, and how dare the Democrats insist otherwise.

Cue Mitt Romney in January of this year:

"Even if you have a child 2 years of age, you need to go to work [...] And people said, "Well that's heartless." And I said, "No, no, I'm willing to spend more giving day care to allow those parents to go back to work. It'll cost the state more providing that day care, but I want the individuals to have the dignity of work."

Mitt's statement perfectly articulates what the Republican Party has always believed. Being a mother isn't work; it is only through employment outside the home that a mother achieves "dignity." And women who don't have the convenience of their husbands' stock portfolio don't deserve to have a choice to stay home with their children. They "need to go to work." Rich women who stay home work hard. Poor women who do are lazy. And undignified.

Spoon fed, taught them to brush their teeth, and learn their ABC's. I did the exact same things at work with special needs kids, and adults. There was not much of a difference, except a paycheck. Is the paycheck what makes one more dignified than the other? Not everyone, who works, sits at a desk in front of a computer making profits for a business.

What he/she is saying is that making MONEY makes it dignified. I wonder what he would think of unpaid volunteers, which we did have come in to help in school. Oh, now UNDIGNIFIED! Republicans can only relate to making money. That is their problem.

My daughter's caregiver has twin boys. She chose to start an in home daycare so she could stay home with her sons until they went to school. She gets paid to watch other people's kids everyday. She gets child support from her ex. If she worked outside the home, her ex would have to pay childcare. She works inside her home, and can't take any more kids because of her 2 boys, but doesn't get paid childcare for her ex for her 2 boys. She can't make more money because her spots are used up by her boys, but if she worked outside the home, her ex would have to pay for their daycare.

It's just the dumbest thing ever.

That must be why his fellow Republicans gave him a standing ovation and consider him so dignified because he's paid by the U.S. government to sped quality diaper time.

It's disgusting - the GOP *ONLY* works to serve the needs of the wealthy and couldn't care less about what we put up with - and the people with means will never experience what we do. Way to go Mitt - keep shooting yourself in the foot.

Pompous pious Asshole!

Sorry, Mittens, I don't have a trust fund to live on--my kids' next meal depends on what I earn! You threaten that, you threaten my kids, and I will not take it lying down! Especially not from some spoiled, pampered rich boy who NEVER got his hands dirty, and NEVER had to sweat where his kids' next meal was coming from! FUCK YOU, MITT!! You have NO GODDAMN RIGHT to lecture ME about DIGNITY, you sonofabitch!
