A stay temporarily halting same-sex marriages in Alaska expired Friday, technically making it legal for couples to seek marriage licenses in the state, while the U.S. Supreme Court denied a further stay sought by the state.
Just one minute after the 9th Circuit stay was dissolved, in a one-line response, U.S. Supreme Court denied a request for a further stay from the state of Alaska.
But while marriages can go forward immediately, with state offices closed Friday in observance of Alaska Day, marriages will not resume until Monday morning.

With state offices closed, it was unclear Friday what the states next steps would be.
The stay marks the latest in a complicated legal back-and-forth surrounding a decision Sunday from U.S. District Court Judge Timothy Burgess finding Alaska's same-sex marriage ban unconstitutional. The state has vowed to challenge the decision.
According to Shannyn Moore, our asshat governor has hired the asshat lawyer who represented Hobby Lobby for the Ninth Circuit appeal. Did I mention that our governor is a true-believer Dominionist? November 4 can't come soon enough.
(And I always really resent when a news report says something like "the state has vowed." It would be ever so much more accurate to say "Sean Parnell has vowed," because from what I've seen, most people here have no problem with marriage equality.)
