Fresh Ebola fears after a passenger flying from to Nigeria to JFK dies in his seat after vomiting

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2796641/fresh-fears-passenger-flying-nigeria-jfk-dies-seat-vomiting-profusely-body-declared-ebola-free-just-cursory-exam-cdc.html

The 63-year-old, a U.S. citizen, died during flight from Lagos to New York
CDC and Port Authority boarded the Arik Air plane with 145 passengers
They confirmed after a short, 'cursory' test he did not have deadly virus
Door connecting the aircraft with the terminal was open the whole time
The ordeal prompted concern from New York Congressman Peter King
In a letter to Homeland Security, he wrote: 'How could you tell so quickly?'
Added it was worrying considering 'how wrong CDC has been' recently
Officials say man died of apparent heart attack; this is yet to be confirmed

Someone pukes and dies on a plane, you can never be sure what the cause. Your sitting there on the plane waiting for the hazmat suited guys to come in. Imagine the what is going through your head regardless of Ebola or not.

They didn't determine what he died of until hours later. You leave the plane still not sure what you might have been exposed to. Airplanes are petri dishes in a good situation.

No matter how rational we are about the "odds," events like that trigger a primal fear.

It's good to read the article at the link, but even better to post the pertinent details in the original post.

Edit to add: Thank you, OP for adding the content.

From the link:

According to the New York Daily News, the man, who was traveling alone, also suffered chest pains before he died. This morning, a Port Authority source said he passed away of an apparent heart attack, but this is yet to be confirmed.

They'll test his blood anyway though. A cursory exam probably didn't have any other symptoms of hemorrhagic fever.

It happened with a lady I bowled with. She was bowling one Wednesday morning on the Ladies coffee league and said she was feeling nauseous. She went up and threw her ball and collapsed. She was gone by the time the EMT's got there.

Happens all the time. No need to panic, the CDC made a quick check and say he does not have Ebola. We can trust the CDC even though it takes 24 hours to get Ebola test results back.

it sounds like people think having a heart attack somehow makes you immune to the possibility that you also have/had ebola.

wrong with you at once."

I would like to know what quickie Ebola test they did. Maybe there is one. But ELISA tests take a day or 2 at least. Maybe there's a quick antibody test that can be done on a very sick person with lots of antibodies in their blood -- anybody know?

Supposedly there's a fairly reliable one that's on the order of magnitude of an hour, but there was talk about it being limited to 'research use only' by the FDA, not for general screening use at hospitals (or airports).

several labs are gearing up to produce these testing kits. Every article makes it sound like the PCR tests aren't standard or widespread, though, and are mainly reserved for research testing. Maybe the CDC has a batch of tests from their research lab that they are using for iffy people like this guy. If so, it's the first sensible thing the CDC has done in a month.

But anyone who was even in the earlier, yet still infectious period could still have a heart attack for other, non-related reasons.

(Edit for clarity: I doubt he had ebola either; I'm just pointing out that a lot of the comments are employing flawed logic.)
