Gay marriage: North Carolina official resigns

A North Carolina official resigned Thursday rather than perform gay marriages, an individual stand that comes as fewer and fewer states are holding on to oppose same-sex unions.
Triggered by a U.S. Supreme Court decision last week, lower courts across the nation have moved to strike down gay marriage bans. Among the holdouts are conservative states such as Arizona and Wyoming, and their defiance comes against a tide of rulings that give hope to those who want to see same-sex unions legalized in every state.
The North Carolina magistrate who quit his job said performing gay marriages would violate his religious beliefs....

(38,613 posts)After all, atheists don't often get married in churches. But once the sex-life of the couple becomes a factor, Oh How Pious They Be!

I am glad the person resigned, though. At least he made one good decision!

Fuck him and the horse he rode in on.

(82,849 posts)How many folks stay in their sinecures and refuse to perform their duties for all citizens? The magistrate (what's his name AP, by the by?) quit rather than violate his beliefs. There's a lot of people who would either violate their own principles or violate their duty to their position. This guy quit (if a bit noisily), taking a professional and financial hit, and stayed true to himself.

(6,604 posts)Gotta applaud him for that, yes.
He didn't belong in that position to begin with.
He'll get a book deal, a position with a right-wing think tank, or at least a couple interviews on Fox. At the very least, he'll have an outpouring of support from like-minded knuckle-draggers.
Good riddance to the asshole.

However, he is not refusing to do his job. He is quitting his job. Not being able to quit a job is not insubordination, it is slavery.

Now if he can talk all those pharmacists to quit who won't sell contraceptives or the Morning-After pill, we'll be even better off.
