McConnell Called 'Needlessly Angry' After Tough KY Sports Radio Interview

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) had an unusually confrontational interview on Wednesday with Kentucky Sports Radio host Matt Jones, who later described him as "needlessly angry" and "the consummate politician."

Early in the interview, McConnell emphasized that he supports sports teams from both the University of Louisville and University of Kentucky, telling Jones that that's "probably not acceptable to you, as an Obama enthusiast." He defended his fandom by pointing out that he'd attended both institutions, Louisville for his undergraduate degree and Kentucky for law school.

At another point, quizzed on the impacts of repealing Obamacare on Kentuckians, where the law has been wildly successful, McConnell interrupted and said, "Yeah, can I finish my answer?"

The aspiring majority leader, whom the host said gave just 10 minutes notice before calling into the show, was grilled on a variety of issues including Obamacare (he called for repealing it "root and branch&quot , coal (he vowed to fight President Obama's agenda to reduce coal emissions), same-sex marriage ("I believe that marriage should be between one man and one woman&quot and whether he accepts climate change ("I'm not a scientist.&quot .

Seriously! Matt Jones, despite being a Democrat, is a very popular sports radio host. His show is extremely popular.

How he got that an "Obama enthusiast" can't be a sports fan is bizarre. Coming off that hateful for no reason to Matt might sound bad to a lot of listeners.

McConnell also once featured the Duke basketball team in one of his ads, he meant to feature the University of Kentucky team, but hey, blue is blue right? WRONG! He was a laughing stock for a long time for that.

McConnell plotted against Obama and the people who voted for him:

Biden: McConnell decided to withhold all cooperation even before we took office

Not exactly a surprise, but still...

I’ve got my copy of Michael Grunwald’s new book on the making of stimulus, The New New Deal, and there are a lot of juicy nuggets in it. In particular, it may shed new light on the degree to which Republicans may have decided to deny Obama all cooperation for the explicit purpose of rendering his presidency a failure — making it easier for them to mount a political comback after their disastrous 2008 losses.

Grunwald has Joe Biden on the record making a striking charge. Biden says that during the transition, a number of Republican Senators privately confided to him that Mitch McConnell had given them the directive that there was to be no cooperation with the new administration — because he had decided that “we can’t let you succeed.”

Here’s the relevant passage, from page 207:

Biden says that during the transition, he was warned not to expect any cooperation on many votes. “I spoke to seven different Republican Senators, who said, `Joe, I’m not going to be able to help you on anything,’ he recalls. His informants said McConnell had demanded unified resistance. “The way it was characterized to me was: `For the next two years, we can’t let you succeed in anything. That’s our ticket to coming back,’” Biden says.

The vice president says he hasn’t even told Obama who his sources were, but Bob Bennett of Utah and Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania both confirmed they had conversations with Biden along these lines.

KSR has the biggest fanbase of any media outlet in Kentucky, because this state is absolutely insane for college basketball Mitch also said he roots for both Louisville and Kentucky's basketball teams and is neutral about which one he likes more, but he's prominently been a Louisville fan for a long time. He's lying when he says he likes UK, and people saw right through it.
