In an interview with Iowa-based conservative talk show host Steve Deace, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee repeated his recommendation that governors simply ignore the Supreme Courts decision to let stand lower court rulings legalizing marriage equality in several new states, adding that state governments should have also ignored Roe v. Wade and the Supreme Court rulings banning school-sponsored prayer. When Deace pressed him on the maelstrom that would be set off if state governments simply ignored court rulings on marriage, Huckabee responded that it was in fact the courts that have set off a constitutional crisis by ruling in favor of marriage equality.
I look back to 1973, he said, referring to the year in which Roe v. Wade was decided, and Im wondering what would have happened if the two branches of government, the executive and the legislative, simply said, We appreciate your opinion, court, but now if states wish to empower that, I guess they can do so, but until that happens were not automatically going to go killing 55 million babies over the next 40 years. In cases such as Roe and rulings in favor of marriage equality and church-state separation, Huckabee said, elected officials should have said, Well, the courts have spoken and its an important voice, but its not the voice of God and the Supreme Court isnt God and simply ignored the courts rulings.
Earlier in the interview, Deace insisted that a drop in support for LGBT rights reported in a recent Pew poll happened because people are seeing this really isnt about consensual love
this is really about in the end using the coercive force of government to get you to abandon your own moral conscience. Huckabee agreed, adding, Its never been an honest situation where those who were advocating the most extreme levels of changing our culture were sincere and straightforward and I dont think weve seen the last of it.
He added his hope that in reaction to yesterdays Supreme Court decision, somewhere there will be a governor who will simply say, No, Im not going to enforce that and order county clerks not to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

(4,144 posts)Cristel and Darla Heffron, who were married in a civil union in Hawaii in 2013, were excited by Mondays Supreme Court ruling that appeared to make gay marriage legal in 11 more states, including Kansas.
Weve been waiting for it to be legal in Kansas, said Cristel Heffron, 32, of Peck. That way we have the same benefits and the same legal rights as anyone else.
But when they went to the Sedgwick County Courthouse on Monday afternoon for a marriage license, they were turned away on orders from a district court judge. Several other same-sex couples were denied licenses by the county, as well.
I guess I kind of knew there was a likely chance of being denied, Heffron said, but when it actually happened, I did start to tear up and become emotional. It is upsetting. We waited a long time, and now were still waiting.
