Who started this fire and why?

Sheridan, the 72-year-old president and chief executive officer of Camden-based Cooper Health System, and his 69-year-old wife were killed in a fire inside their home in Somerset County on Sept. 28. Authorities believe the fire was intentionally set, but have not yet determined causes of death.

John Sheridan served as the commissioner of the Department of Transportation during the administration of Tom Kean Sr. The former governor said Sheridan took over the department at a challenging time that included a need for repairs throughout the state, but only limited funding.

He credited Sheridan with the creation and championing of the state’s Transportation Trust Fund, including building a coalition that helped get the complicated funding mechanism for the transportation upgrades through the state Legislature at the time.

Sheridan joined Cooper Health System, which operates Cooper University Hospital, in 2005, and he was named chief executive officer in 2008. He previously was a senior partner and co-chairman at Morristown-based law firm Riker, Danzig, Scherer, Hyland & Perretti.

Sheridan guided Cooper Health System through a difficult period brought on by allegations that members of the Cooper Heart Institute Advisory Board entered into improper consulting and compensation agreements with doctors. In Jan. 2013, Cooper Health System agreed to a $12.6 million joint state-federal settlement.

The settlement ended a joint, federal-state investigation into financial relationships between the Cooper Heart Institute in Camden, the Cooper Heart Institute Advisory Board and doctors who served on the Advisory Board.

The fire that apparently claimed the lives of the president of a major southern New Jersey hospital and his wife has been ruled arson, authorities said Wednesday.

Investigators with the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office determined that the fire last weekend was intentionally set in the master bedroom of the Montgomery Township home where John Sheridan, 72, lived with his 69-year-old wife, Joyce. However, they did not provide further details on their findings.

Authorities have not yet said what caused the couple's deaths. County Prosecutor Geoffrey Soriano said the investigation is ongoing, adding that his office is awaiting lab test results.

Police and firefighters responded to the couple's home just before 6:15 a.m. Sunday. Authorities have said the fire was contained to the master bedroom, where firefighters found the unresponsive couple.
