Some of the imported hemp seeds detained by U.S. customs officials in the spring turned into 10-foot-tall plants that were harvested Tuesday on a research plot in Kentucky, where marijuana's non-intoxicating cousin has gained a foothold as a potential cash crop.
A sickle bar mower pulled by a tractor made half a dozen swaths to cut the hemp patch at the University of Kentucky research farm. Farmers wanting to learn more about the crop were among the curious who posed for pictures while holding long, leafy stalks.
"There's a great possibility that it could become a viable crop in Kentucky," said UK agronomist David Williams, who helped oversee the research plot. "It's not the most complicated plant to grow for farmers. I think they would pick up on it immediately with very little guidance."

(6,688 posts)I have no idea why they think they need to do research. Seldom a week goes by in summer that they don't destroy a field of the illegal variety.

(1,754 posts)It was very important to Kentucky's early economy although it had its ups and downs over the years. I'm confident it would still be a major crop in the state if it hadn't been made illegal at the federal level.

(51,076 posts)30 and 40 or so years ago when much of my free time was used in looking for plots to plants seeds in the fall and winter and taking care of the plants that grew during the spring, summer and fall. One years we put some seeds in the ground when the ashes were still smoking from the brush pile that had just burned and that plant got no telling how tall. I know that it was over 8 ft to the first limb and that my friend and I harvested 83 ounces each of green buds from it, when they dried we each had 43 ounces of smoke each. I do know that that pot plant, (hemp family) can and do grow like gang busters under the right circumstances. Needless to say we were pretty durn popular for quiet a while after that harvest as we never sold a bit of it, shared it with friend but didn't sell any.
I grew enough pot for so long (years) that I can recognize a male plant from a female shortly after they come up, within a few inches. I also know that if it will get you high the first time you top them that it will only get better but if it won't get you high that first picking you might as well as write it off as it won't get any better. I know both of these as FACT, learned from years of growing experience.
I haven't put a seed in the ground in years now and won't be in the future as I no long toke, personal reasons. I have no problem with anyone else smoking though.
