A lot of stories I hear, and personal experience dictates cheap labor is now EVERYTHING. Period. End of story.

(38,613 posts)They argued that businesses should be allowed to pay as little as possible, and that citizens should clamor over one another to make sure other people get stuck in those jobs. They really did think that business was more important than citizens. It was an astonishing change in attitude.

(3,252 posts)It wasn't this bad before. Companies actually used to care about their workers. I have been following Procter & Gamble's practices, and their regard work their workers has gone way downhill.
Of course, unions used to have more power back in the day.

(3,252 posts)I think owners were somewhat better back in the day. But perhaps it was because unions demanded respect.

(1,239 posts)It was a lot better in the 70's. Companies actually believed in sharing the wealth and treating workers fairly. That all changed in the last 45 years. Today they don't give a shit and could care less about social responsibility. I remember reading about in FDR time the high tax rate was tolerated not because they wanted to share the wealth but there was a significant fear that if they did not share the wealth something worse would happen in particular communism would take over.
