NY Times Editorial - Wrong Turn on Syria: No Convincing Plan

Wrong Turn on Syria: No Convincing Plan
By THE EDITORIAL BOARD SEPT. 23, 2014

President Obama has put America at the center of a widening war by expanding into Syria airstrikes against the Islamic State, the Sunni extremist group known as ISIS and ISIL. He has done this without allowing the public debate that needs to take place before this nation enters another costly and potentially lengthy conflict in the Middle East.

< . . . .>

The military action early Tuesday was quite different from what Mr. Obama explained in a televised speech on Sept. 10. For months the administration has focused on the ISIS threat, yet these strikes also targeted Khorasan, a group the government says is linked to Al Qaeda and engaged in “active plotting that posed an imminent threat to the United States and potentially our allies.”

It is puzzling that Mr. Obama would address the nation on a terrorist threat and not mention the group that officials now say poses an imminent threat to the United States, which ISIS does not. They say they kept details about Khorasan secret so the group would not know it was being tracked. But past threats, including Osama bin Laden, were discussed openly even as they were tracked.

These incongruities — two enemies now, instead of one — call into question whatever sense of purpose and planning the administration hopes to project. Mr. Obama has said airstrikes alone are not enough, and native ground troops in both Iraq and Syria will be relied on after the bombings. But it will be months before Americans can turn the mainstream opposition into a fighting force; in Iraq, after six weeks of American airstrikes, Iraqi Army troops have scarcely budged ISIS from its strongholds.

3. Obama unilaterally committed us to a long bloody civil war.

A civil war that has no quick or clean resolution.

Before anyone starts pissing and moaning, it is unilateral war in Syria in that he is acting without congress or the UN. Yes, he was able to drag 5 Arab nations to support it, but doesn't change the illegality.

We're now in this strange construc where we are fighting two wars with two very different coalitions: one in Iraq and one in Syria. What a mess.

8. Nope - committed us to TRANSITIONING war responsibilities to Arab countries

so they can handle their OWN crazy Sunni extremists in the future. You don't like the transition process, then come up with a workable, effective strategy for the region and send it to the UN.

Funny how that important fact about the other countries involved being all Sunni nations seems to be ignored by those committed to displays of breathless rhetoric.....including the NYT, who believed Bush's INVASION and OCCUPATION without the public involvement of Arab nations was the correct approach.

Kerry achieved something brilliant and monumental in bringing this group together in order to begin this transition and you all think it's 'no different than Bush', dontcha?

To call this brilliant and monumental is laughable.

The involvement of the Arab nations is notable, but essentially political window dressing so far. There is nothing to transition and we're committed to a war lasting several years, with no reliable ground element.

12. Laugh, laugh all you want - It is STILL a transitioning effort. Don't care much that

you perceive it as 'laughable'. I bothered to pay attention to Kerry's work on this for many years, as Senator AND SoS. I know exactly what he is doing here and the leverage he has been using to make it happen. (BCCI)

Those who never bothered to fully understand BCCI are not expected to get it and I don't expect many of them will show interest in doing so now in a personal effort to wrap their brains around this transition effort for that region and for the US.

4. So, the alternative?

Damned if you do, damned if you don't -

Let's ask Romney or Mccain - oh, that's right - congress already got their plan from cheney..they seem to be okay with this - until they are not..

I don't want this warring any more than anyone else does...been there done that - from Viet Nam to Iraq - but I also don't want an NSA memo ignored (Condi and Bush) -

Perhaps the NYT is just covering their proverbial ass this time....arm chair quarterbacks..I thought they were better than this...

Thank you Mr. President for all you do, against all odds....

5. Not going to thank him for getting us involved in a civil war - sorry.

He is wrong on this. And there is a pretty easy answer. Stay the fuck out of it.

Again, this bullshit goes on all over the world. I don't see us rushing in to "protect" innocents. Oh yeah, that is not what we are doing. We are "protecting" our interests, aka, oil.
