Yet another set of ominous projections about the Ebola epidemic in West Africa was released Tuesday, in a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that gave worst- and best-case estimates for Liberia and Sierra Leone based on computer modeling.
In the worst-case scenario, the two countries could have a total of 21,000 cases of Ebola by Sept. 30 and 1.4 million cases by Jan. 20 if the disease keeps spreading without effective methods to contain it. These figures take into account the fact that many cases go undetected, and estimate that there are actually 2.5 times as many as reported.
In the best-case model, the epidemic in both countries would be almost ended by Jan. 20, the report said. Success would require conducting safe funerals at which no one touches the bodies, and treating 70 percent of patients in settings that reduce the risk of transmission. The report said the proportion of patients now in such settings was about 18 percent in Liberia and 40 percent in Sierra Leone.

(28,979 posts)I posted a video about the symposium held by the Duke Global Health Institute yesterday. Dr. Chris Woods and Dr. Michael Merson presented the same facts you are here. Two people bothered to respond only to say it was a scam and nothing to worry about based on some very sketchy Conspiracy Theory loons. I think that response is little better than the people killing health workers because they think the workers have come to harm them. Ignorance is not just a third world problem.
Thank you for trying to present important information about this life threatening catastrophe in Africa.

(118,677 posts)a year, we should be worried about that instead". I couldn't quite believe it. And I responded "well wouldn't it have been great if we had had the opportunity to stop malaria before it was so big, like we can with ebola right now." And now it is looking like so many are in jeopardy. The good news is that people are getting educated and those that insist on practicing the dangerous funeral rights on the bodies are being shunned by their communities. So information is getting in. Not 100% yet. Let us hope that it can be stopped in the next weeks during this cycle. It is so upsetting.

(118,677 posts)on studying malaria. And billions on agriculture sciences. In the last twenty years much attention has been put into those things you talk about. Still not enough. But there was a good chance of keeping ebola breakout small in the beginning and with the right resources. There is still a chance to turn it around.

(12,081 posts)the research and the same will happen with the research done on ebola. Global capitalism at its finest.

(118,677 posts)into the soil and that information is available to all.It is not only capitalism. Though capitalism has brought huge growth of the middle class in places like Kenya and Ghana. Did you know a lot of fancy cut flowers sold in Europe are grown in Kenya and flown to the EU every day. For sure pure capitalism is evil. But that doesnt really exist in the world. Most countries are mixed market economies. So too in Africa.
