My favorite time of the year is in progress

Labor Day starts things off for me. A salute to working men and women starting things off for me is more than fitting if you know me.

The leaves are turning into COLORS. The weather is turning too. Today our hummingbirds are gone until next Spring. We leave the feeders out for others that happen by on their travels South.

It is football season. High school, college, and pro. Sort of a trifecta.

It means a trip or two to Nebraska City for the apple harvest and all that goes with it. It can be hard to take it all in.

IF you are a fan of Capote's writing, "It's fruitcake weather" Mornings with a chill and fog.

Halloween is just around the corner. Spooks and goblins for a few brief weeks.

Thanksgiving, Christmas, and new Years aren't far behind.

These four months are by far the best of the year.

I need the cooler temps and lower humidity to make the work less taxing. Last winter was unusually cold, and the spring was squandered due to my job forcing me onto third shift, so I am just now able to get back on it.

It's getting dark earlier, getting cooler ( only in the 80s today, last week was 105 ). No trees turning, but this is Los Angeles...

The leaves seem to be turning early this year. Our maples are near peak and it is only late Sept. Even the oaks are getting some yellowish leaves. We usually don't have peak color until the third week of Oct.

I have no idea what that means, however! LOL I saw a monarch butterfly today. We still have hummers and the summer birds haven't started to migrate yet.

Enjoy this lovely season, Steve!

I see messy dead leaves everywhere. I enjoy the heat, Independence Day, and the more civilized sport, baseball. May to August is best, with July so good they should just rename it sex. I'll give you Christmas though.

Last night I used a quilt for the first time this season. Good sleeping weather coming. Good reading weather, too. Acorns on the ground, cherry trees showing the first yellows and reds, and the first hint of that sweet Fall leaf decay smell from the park. Autumn grasses ridiculously poetic when seen against a full moon. Cricket orchestras replace cicada concerts. Hot coffee instead of iced. Long sleeves, not short, and in preparation for the cold, forgotten dark-colored wools pulled from hibernation and aired out. Days shorten, the sun begins to move back to the correct place where I can see it set from my balcony. The oven's summer vacation will be over soon, I want the brown smells of baking breads and roasting squash and sweet potatoes and things grown under the ground, large pieces of savory meats, simmering stews perfuming rooms all afternoon. Candles. The wind whistling and rain falling at night and you cozy with a book under warm blankets glad to be home and safe. Snow under a streetlight as if it's a stage where someone will appear and sing opera. Bare black tree branches making patterns against a starry sky. Memories of childhood Halloweens, Thanksgivings, Christmases miraculously brought back by a taste or smell. The smell of roasting turkey or a freshly cut pumpkin or pine branches and you're eight years old again. And then at the end of December the day gets as short as it can and we start the whole thing over again.

But after they fall off, by late November, everything looks so bare and pre-white.

It truly is the perfect time of year for me. Tons of pumpkin foods (breads, pies, lattes, etc), fresh baked bread, simmering soups, crackle of a fire in the fireplace to keep off the evening chill. Still several weeks out here in VA for fire weather, but as soon as it gets to the 50's at night, I light one up. Nothing relaxes me more.

But after that, the only thing to look forward to is Thanksgiving and Christmas. Then, it starts to get dark and cold and I feel depressed with all the gloomy cold dark days.
I can't wait until spring and warmer weather.
