(8,028 posts)I have friends and family that are freaking out about ISIS and I'm just not feelin' it.
Ebola, on the other hand, has me harkening back to the early days of HIV...and a "gay" virus that just wasn't really a concern unless, of course, you just happened to be GHEYYY!111!!1."
--->> 550,000 potential cases of Ebola by the end of January, has my attention.

(5,169 posts)What worries me is the shit they are stirring up could lead to the use of nuclear weapons by either Iran or Israel. Or perhaps even one that they get ahold of through Pakistan.
As for Ebola? Yes, having your internal organs turned to mush as you are literally crying blood is pretty freakin' scary.
Both of them are giant problems that need attention. Even if it is more convenient to ignore them because they supposedly don't affect us directly, or because other diseases kill even more people.

(12,530 posts)When they do get nuclear weapons, I'm guessing that MAD will keep them in check just as it does the rest of the nuclear nations.

(27,172 posts)I was in a bar where they had it on with closed captioning.
(I have no idea why they had it on).
Anyway, Pat Robertson had Jay Sekulow on (I always think Suck-You-Low, because I'm really just 12 years old) who has managed to bang out a book on ISIS over the weekend, apparently.
Anyway, the whole segment was about pimping his book so they were talking about all the "scary secrets" we aren't being told and how Obama is getting ready to sell us out, etc. etc.
So, if this kind of fear mongering is going on a lot on the right, then I can see how people are fearful.
But, yeah, ebola is a much more immediate threat to the entire world.
Everyone is just one plane flight away from being infected.

(10,597 posts)... to just change the channel. The ISIS propaganda has been pumped out for over a month now. When it comes on, I either turn stations or just turn the TV off altogether. I don't know why our leaders listen to and believe anything that comes out of our Intel agencies mouths. They lied us into war 13 years ago, and they're doing the same thing now.
The trouble comes when the people & our elected officials believe the lies. War is a racket, TeeYIYI. It enriches the owners of the Military Industrial Contractors, bankrupts our country and kills our countrymen/ladies in uniform.
Peace to you, your family and friends.

(38,187 posts)That is really what it is. They are literally selling the war. It's just another product advertisement....except it is on our dollar and we are the "investors" whether we agree with neverending war or not.
... This isn't "our" life. We belong to them and they make all the decisions that effect our lives. I don't remember signing a contract, so I don't know how they get away with it. Maybe they consider our citizenship as a contract?
It was a pretense for war. The MIC was itching for some more money in it's pocket and blood on it's hands. The beast must be fed, dont'cha know..

(3,539 posts)If push comes to shove, I am sure the M.I.C will happily profit from doing "shock and awe" on ISIS and any unfortunate "collateral damage" that are killed "spreading democracy".
Weaponized Drones and Cruz missiles will not work on Wall Street. Hell, they are the ones that own and control those toys.
They are already testing cures and immunization for Ebola.
You can not cure stupid. You can not immunize against greed. Their is no vaccine to eliminate hate.

As long as people see Ebola as an African problem, it has the potential to get a whole lot worse before it can get better.

(10,745 posts)HIV wasn't just a LGBT issue. Never had been. Ebola, however, IS an Africa-specific problem for the time being, and has been for a very long time.

(10,745 posts)I trust the Obama Administration to take every possible step to protect us from any possible Ebola issues here in the States.
ISIS, on the other hand, is scarier. If they're not stopped, they eventually *could* attack American targets. And given how utterly sociopathic many of them are, I wouldn't discount their willingness to try, in the least.

(13,598 posts)My guess is that
ISIS will kill a number of Westerners in the low double figures
The current Ebola outbreak will kill a number of westerners in single figures
The total ISIS death toll will be in five or conceivably six figures
The total death toll from the current outbreak of Ebola will be in four to five figures.
That said, it's more likely that I've underestimated the ebola death toll by multiple orders of magnitude than that ISIS will start WWIII. But, even so, I think they're the one likely to cause more death, and much more non-fatal suffering.
I note, however, that these are neither close to being the scariest anti-western military/political force (China, Russia) nor the scariest disease (AIDS, malaria, TB). They're both just causes du jour.

(20,176 posts)Ebola isn't a real concern. The mortality rate with advanced treatment, the kind that is impossible in the African Bush but would be standard for any patent in the industrialized world, is not terrible. (It's not great but it's on the low side of 40%, maybe half that even.) Beyond that, we've effectively identified an experimental treatment that appears to work but is not widely-available due to production issues that will be ironed-out in coming months. Another is anecdotally nearly-there. The panic on Ebola is late...we're at the point similar to the hysteria at the tail-end of the Spanish flu outbreak when the public became concerned after the situation was largely in-hand but the death-tolls were reaching the scary numbers. I don't want to make light of it, a lot of Africans are going to die terrible deaths...but Ebola is not a threat to America. It simply isn't. There isn't going to be an Ebola pandemic which isn't regionally-constrained. There isn't going to be an epidemic in the US. It's a disease we've had the scientific wherewithal to conquer months or years ago and didn't for fucked-up reasons (not profitable, no real motivation to do so)...the very-public crisis of the latest outbreak may motivate US scientists and pharmaceutical companies to do what they should have done years ago.
What we have is a poll about scary things with remote possibilities. As far as that goes, the odds of an IS terrorist attack on US soil are remote. The odds of an Ebola crisis on US soil are almost non-existent.

(3,208 posts)No question for me and my family. My son is in eastern Africa with the Peace Corps.
This virus should be a turning point in humanity. The climate change should also show us all, this is it guys. ONE planet. We all need to work together to make things better for our children, and their children. Making up a bunch of stuff that is all in the mind is not going to help anyone's cause. There is no religion, no race, no political party that is going to come out on top when the planet can easily form things that will wipe out everyone.
I have also always secretly hoped for a real alien invasion (like the Independence Day movie) because I think that will be the only thing that will really get people to realize we are all here together. We are all made of the same stuff. We are all connected.
That's my $.02!
TeeYiYi
(8,028 posts)...that the people of the world need to work together for the common good. This planet is not that big and we are all the same underneath the packaging. One race; the human race.
I have to say, though, that I'll pass on the alien invasion. If you want to see a scary variation on that concept, just watch the movie, Edge of Tomorrow.

Hopefully the world will get its head out of it's collective ass and realize that providing sterile, clean quality healthcare to every human being is of benefit to us all. Poverty is a breeding ground for emerging viruses.

(3,208 posts)They did evacuate the volunteers from this area, so I think they are on the ball.
You are very right, it is about as simple as having access to clean water, soap, bleach and the knowledge that these things can be taken care of like that. Things we take for granted here.
When I think about how the koch brothers and their kind have billions and billions of dollars, when no one family really needs that, it just makes me sick. Every human on earth should have access to clean water and a way to protect themselves from germs.

(10,044 posts)Our washing of everything and antibiotics, more clinics, hospitals, and our literacy level is higher so that the disease can handled and cured more easily.
And our dead would be disposed of more quickly and not lie on the streets because of the fear in handling them.
No picnic no matter where ebola spreads, but people have been cured with the right treatment.

(110,159 posts)both are equally detrimental to the group and area being effected. who am i to decide who is more or less dispensable.
if i am a woman, speaking out in iraq. i am gonna say they are the greater threat and ebola does not have a place. if i am in the countries in africa affected, well... the obvious. that will be my concern.

(12,081 posts)I have plenty to worry about right here like if someone in our family gets cancer will we go bankrupt or will my autistic son be able to take care of himself and even if he can what if he can't earn enough to stay out of poverty? What if there is no SSDI for him if he ever needs it? Will my daughter ever experience domestic violence? Those are the things that scare me.
