Walmart launches 'fight hunger' campaign

Wal-Mart Stores, Bentonville, Ark., said Monday its Walmart Foundation is launching a nationwide campaign to get the public involved in fighting hunger.

The campaign — called “Fight Hunger. Spark Change.” — will ask the public to cast one vote per day through Oct. 5 at www.walmart.com/fighthunger to indicate which food banks and local partner agencies they would like to see receive money from the Walmart Foundation; each of the 50 winning food banks will receive a $60,000 grant — a total of $3 million, equivalent to more than 37 million meals, Walmart said.

The campaign will also include six CPG companies — ConAgra Foods, General Mills, Hormel, Kellogg Co., PepsiCo/Quaker and Unilever — who collectively will donate $426,000, or the equivalent of 4.26 million meals, Walmart said. The Walmart Foundation will also donate $300,000 to Feeding America nationally, the company added.

"Gentlemen, we've got to do something about all our employees on food stamps! The media is killing us."
"We could give them raises."
(Bang) "Anyone else?"
"We could donate a couple million to food banks, take the tax write-off, and milk the publicity."
"Genius!!"

Before I read the article, I figured that Walmart was going to sponsor another food drive a each store allowing their employees to donate canned goods like a year or so ago. My apologies in this case only to Walmart.

I remember their Christmas food drive, asking their customers to donate food so their employees could have a decent Christmas.

If this is correct the meals provided cost less than $.10 per meal. What does one get in a 10 cent meal?
