Spanking is only the beginning. There is so much more you must do

Apparently corporal punishment is one of those trigger topics that make some people behave like the adults in Footloose.

A group with too much time on their hands have decided, rather than minding their own business, they have to attack DU parents for swatting misbehaving kids on the butt. The argument goes like this - The government should prevent parents from engaging in activity that might harm children or might result in future harmful effects. Spanking might harm children or cause future harmful effects. Therefore the government should prevent spanking.

In other words, because spanking can cause problems for kids later in life, then we must stigmatize parents, encourage the government to invade our private lives and generally behave like lemmings eager to jump into the water of despotic authoritarianism.

Of course, the same is true for television, sports, video games, bicycles, rock music, pools, fast food, and public schools. Because each of these things has the potential to cause physical, mental, emotional, and/or behavioral problems, those who are attacking people who scoff at a ban on spanking should include the previous list to their things the government should arrest parents for doing.

To fail to do so is a tacit admission of hypocrisy.

Pure strawman.

The real argument is that the government should prevent you from physically assaulting another human being. Even if you think you 'own' them because you gave birth to them, or adopted them, or are fostering them.

There's no 'might harm' and there's no 'result in future harmful effects'.

and spanking does harm children. there is a mountain of evidence to attest to that claim- not might, does.

I don't claim to know what the answer is beyond education.

Defenders, and their ilk, can proudly claim
that being beat half to death,
twice, has caused no harm.

Is that what you do? You 'swat' your kids?

You realize that when you hit your kid, you are admitting to failure as a parent? Nah, bet not.

This is one of the saddest OPs I've ever seen on DU. Almost like a cry for help.
