CBS football host: 600 women have died since Ray Rice hit his wife-Problem is bigger than football.

There has been, appropriately so, intense and widespread outrage following the release of the video showing what happened inside the elevator at the casino. But wouldn’t it be productive if this collective outrage, as my colleagues have said, could be channelled to truly hear and address the long-suffering cries for help by so many women? And as they said, do something about it? Like an on-going education of men about what healthy, respectful manhood is all about.

And it starts with how we view women. Our language is important. For instance, when a guy says, ‘you throw the ball like a girl’ or ‘you’re a little sissy,’ it reflects an attitude that devalues women and attitudes will eventually manifest in some fashion. Women have been at the forefront in the domestic violence awareness and prevention arena. And whether Janay Rice considers herself a victim or not, millions of women in this country are.

Consider this: According to domestic violence experts, more than three women per day lose their lives at the hands of their partners. That means that since the night February 15th in Atlantic City [when the elevator incident occurred] more than 600 women have died.

◾Every 9 seconds in the US a woman is assaulted or beaten.
◾Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women—more than car accidents, muggings, and rapes combined.
◾Studies suggest that up to 10 million children witness some form of domestic violence annually.
◾Nearly 1 in 5 teenage girls who have been in a relationship said a boyfriend threatened violence or self-harm if presented with a breakup.
◾Everyday in the US, more than three women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends.
◾Ninety-two percent of women surveyed listed reducing domestic violence and sexual assault as their top concern.
◾Domestic violence victims lose nearly 8 million days of paid work per year in the US alone—the equivalent of 32,000 full-time jobs.
◾The costs of intimate partner violence in the US alone exceed $5.8 billion per year: $4.1 billion are for direct medical and health care services, while productivity losses account for nearly $1.8 billion.
◾Men who as children witnessed their parents’ domestic violence were twice as likely to abuse their own wives than sons of nonviolent parents.

When it is ignored by high-visibility organizations, Joe six-pack gets the message that it is OK to slap the little woman around....makes him just one of the guys.

...it's bringing domestic violence back into the spotlight where it needs to be. I hope Rice gets therapy, I hope he and his wife can work this out. I'm ready to move on from Rice and start discussing domestic violence (including children), in general.

I have my opinion on the answer but that topic continues to remain taboo in social discourse as somehow exhibiting intolerance.

While not originating with religion, are reenforced by most religions. So I place most of the blame there. But I'm a Christopher Hitchens fan, and I do believe "God is not Great" and that "Religion Poisons Everything".

After all the republicans voted against the violence against woman act. They should be running ads everywhere the republicans are running. But the dems are inept so I don't expect much from them. They raised all this money for the democrats for this 2014 election and I don't know how there spending it.
