There is a fascinating set of events that follows in the the small French town of Lasquene when the the town's mayor, the Comte Reynaud, is forced by newcomer Vianne to face the fact that the town drunkard, Serge, has been beating his wife Josephine. I suspect Reynaud has formerly turned a blind eye to the problem. But it is now handled in an intriguing manner: While Vianne looks after Josephine, Reynaud deals with Serge (amusingly, the first thing he does is to haul Serge off to the town priest for confession). In other words, the leading man of the town has decided it is his job to deal with a wife abuser, and make him stop. He does not let Serge make excuses, and does not blame Josephine. Essentially, the onus is on the abuser. This is as it should be.
