BALTIMORE LaTonya Jones is a survivor. The first time her husband hit her, she got out of that relationship immediately. She was strong for her kids, she said.
But that isnt keeping her from wearing her Ray Rice jersey.
Im keeping my jersey, she said. Im not going to trade it in.
Jones sat at a tailgate with friends many of whom were also wearing No. 27 before the Baltimore Ravens kicked off against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night and said that she supports Rice.

(180 posts)It just got more and more cringeworthy as I read it.
How do these women peddle these ridiculous excuses as victims of abuse?
They were drunk
She hit him first
It had nothing to do with his job
It happens every day
And, my personal favorite: it happened in February, therefore it should have ended in February. What the fuck???? Yeah, let's set a current-month statute of limitations for getting being knocked unconscious in an assault. One of the dumbest things I think I've ever heard.

(6,342 posts)I understand people are trying to compare it to show Vick got prison for abusing dogs and Rice got nothing for abusing a woman. But it's not really the same thing.
Vick was taking dogs and making them fight, collecting bets on who will win, and then torturing and killing the loser. First off, doing that suggests some psychotic behavior. That's not normal. Second, he was committing several different crimes. He wasn't just abusing dogs. He was running a gambling ring. He set up a company as a front to the operation. Etc...
So it's not really a equal comparison.

(63,912 posts)so stop this. Women are killed by their husbands and partners every day in America.
Just stop. You've said enough.
davidn3600
(6,342 posts)You are expanding this thing way beyond the specific case in question.
If you want to start a discussion about domestic violence and how women are killed by it, then start a thread for that. But Ray Rice didn't kill anyone here. So let's not make false equivalences.
SunSeeker
(51,574 posts)He punched this women so hard with his massive arm that she went flying, her head slamming into the metal railing in the elevator. She was OUT COLD. That means she suffered a head injury. People die from these type of punches all the time, mostly from there head hitting an object when they fall.
Rice showed absolutely no concern for her--or even checked her pulse. He just dragged her out of the elevator like a sack of garbage. He KICKED her legs out of the elevator doors, not wanting to be bothered to bend down to move them.
How is THAT not as psychotic as killing a dog? Rice almost killed this woman. Is not a woman worth more than a dog in your mind?
davidn3600
(6,342 posts)If he killed her, he'd be on trial for murder.
If someone attempts to kill someone but fails, do we still give them the death penalty? No. Of course not. The law works on a system of tiers depending on how bad a crime was and this then defines what the sentence should be. Not all crimes are the same and our laws reflect that.
Should Ray Rice have gone to jail? Absolutely. I never said he shouldn't. But I don't know the laws in Maryland. I know in my state there are actually three different degrees a person can be charged with domestic violence ranging from a misdemeanor (first time offenders get no jail) to a aggravated felony that can go as high as 10 years. What degree a person is charged with depends on prior criminal history and the extent of the injuries....also if a child was witnessing it could elevate it.
The point I was making above is that Vick did more than just abuse animals. He killed them and he was involved in gambling. There were multiple other crimes Vick was committing, therefore you cannot compare his sentence to what Ray Rice got. It is not an equivalence.
Saying that I think animals are worth more than women is freakin ridiculous. And you are putting words in my mouth. Im not even going to reply to such nonsense.

The only difference is in attempted murder the victim happens to survive--no thanks to the perp. If we are simply looking at the actions of the perpetrator, attempted murder is not "well beyond" murder. They are the same.
You said Vick's actions were "psychotic" because he tortured and killed dogs. You explicitly distinguished Vick from Rice in that you thought Vick's actions were psychotic and apparently Rice's were not.
As you said in post #15:
To suggest that kicking the body of a woman he just knocked out cold is not psychotic, but rather "normal, " certainly does demonstrate how you value women compared to dogs.
Oh, and just so I don't get alerted on again by someone who claims Ray Rice didn't kick Janay, here's the video. He kicks her right leg with his left foot at 0.13, the way you would kick a piece of trash out of the way. My husband was the one who actually noticed that and pointed it out to me.

REASON FOR ALERT
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.
YOUR COMMENTS
"Is not a woman worth more than a dog in your mind?" -- WTF? The poster *NEVER* said this, and the unbelievably insulting straw man argument is completely over the top.
JURY RESULTS
A randomly-selected Jury of DU members completed their review of this alert at Fri Sep 12, 2014, 10:01 AM, and voted 0-7 to LEAVE IT ALONE.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: If it weren't for strawmen arguments we wouldn't have many debates at all
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Alerter needs to quit imagining things.
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: This post is very inaccurate. Janay was not pregnant when this occurred, he didn't almost kill her and he didn't kick her legs. What was done was horrible all on it's own, it doesn't need to be embellished like this poster did.
The other poster never said what she's accusing him of, but I don't think this rises to the level of needing to be hidden. More honesty less hair on fire would be nice.
Finally, if we're to have conversations about domestic violence it doesn't help when wild accusations and lies are thrown about in this manner. This poster might want to think about that.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: The person she is responding to seems to have a particularly thick skull concerning domestic abuse.
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given

I was aghast thinking it might be Rice's number.
Maybe it belongs to some other wife beater athlete.

(4,788 posts)it's their business. If they want to keep wearing his jersey, it's their business. I liked Rice as a player. He did some incredible things while on the team, especially during their Super Bowl winning season. He was also very active in the community in Baltimore, a lot of which never made the news. I was disappointed when I heard about his hitting Janey and feel that Rice deserved to be cut by the team and suspended by the NFL. I have a generic Ravens t-shirt that I will continue to wear, having never owned a jersey of anyone on the team (I will admit that I'm tempted by Justin Tucker and Joe Flacco's however). I don't understand why some other women are not upset about Rice's actions. But I'm not giving up on either football in general and the Ravens in particular. Hopefully, we'll make the playoffs again this year - we have some great, young, talented players. And, oh yeah, we beat the Steelers last night 26-6.
