Bill Nighy Blasts Margaret Thatcher for Bashing Gays, Trade Unions

Hollywood Reporter @THR · ICYMI Toronto: Bill Nighy Blasts Margaret Thatcher for Bashing Gays, Trade Unions http://thr.cm/4X0bQL

The 'Pride' star praised the UK comedy about militant gays uniting with striking miners in 1984 Britain

Pride star Bill Nighy on Sunday lashed out at former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, who died last year, for bullying gay and lesbians and trade unions during her 1980s reign.

"When I was young, people still went to jail for public displays of affection, people of the same sex. It's bizarre to say that," he told the Pride press conference on Sunday during the Toronto Film Festival...

"To crush whole communities all over the country, communities of decent, working men and women, who were demonized in the press and were invented as actual enemies of the state… that's what they did," Nighy said of the Thatcher government's battle against mining unions...

About the effect of Thatcherites closing coal mines in Yorkshire, and about a brass band that is run by some of the miners. (The actual brass band in the film is composed of coal miners who lost their jobs because Thatcherites closed their pit.)

The first is one of the miners who moonlights as a clown for childrens' parties.

The second is after the band has just won first prize in a national competition for brass bands (the setting is the Albert Hall, a major music venue in London), great performance by the late Peter Postlethwaite

To cheer you up a bit, here is the performance which earns the band the trophy, the finale of the William Tell Overture

Just a joy to watch. I liked Brassed Off. Another great working man's film is Spanish, called Mondays in the Sun. It seems that in the US, movies about labor aren't made anymore (though we all know why).

If you like spy movies, Bill Nighy is in an extended miniseries called Page Eight that is wonderful. Anything either of those two actors is in, I'll watch it.

For me, he's one of those actors who makes even a mediocre movie better just by being in it. I'd love to see him and Jane Lynch in a movie together.

He elevates every film he appears in. If you have not seen "Girl In The Cafe", made for HBO, you MUST. It is beautiful and powerful.

I had the good fortune to see him live on Broadway a couple of years ago in THE VERTICAL HOUR, with Julianne Moore. It was one of the most wonderful nights I've ever had in the theater.

Good on you, Bill!

Before I saw it, I questioned the age difference between the two leads, but Bill made it convincing.
