Jennifer Lawrence Nude Photo Leak Isn't A "Scandal." It's A Sex Crime.

Jennifer Lawrence Nude Photo Leak Isn't A "Scandal." It's A Sex Crime.

As most of you probably know, someone somewhere dumped a deluge of purported nude photographs of a number of female celebrities online yesterday. The victims include the likes of Kate Upton, Victoria Justice, Ariana Grande, Kirsten Dunst, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Krysten Ritter, Yvonne Strahovski, and Teresa Palmer. But the focal point for this story has been Hunger Games/American Hustle actress Jennifer Lawrence, since the Oscar winning actress is perhaps the most famous actress on the planet right now. Without going into sordid details ( Justice and Grande have claimed their respective photos are fake, others have confirmed they are real), I’d like to make two very specific points. Ms. Lawrence and the other victims have absolutely nothing to apologize for in terms of the contents of the photos or the nature in which they were leaked. The story itself should not be addressed as if it were a scandal, but rather what it is: A sex crime involving theft of personal property and the exploitation of the female body.

I learned a long time ago that even though I may have the right of way, it's not going to stop someone determined to run me over so caution should always be first.

Now watch all the critics arrive.

But honestly ... if I were her granny I would be wagging my finger. It doesn't matter what a perfect world is like. It doesn't matter if its unfair, etc. It is what it is. PROTECT yourself because once its on the internet it is there forever. I wish her luck in getting judgment for this but sometimes the best lessons are the hardest. I speak from experience.

No sense making it easier for the thief.

In the same way, we should be able to simultaneously hold the views that...

1) people should not HAVE to protect themselves from this sort of thing, and

2) people should try to protect themselves from this sort of thing.

In other words, "arming" a potential victim is not the same as blaming them.

Does anyone think for a minute that the FBI would care if a naked pic of anyone of us was suddenly "leaked?" I'm sure the FBI would get right on any complaint I made about this sort of thing. Riiggghhht.

Seriously?

And, I don't equate a celebrity selfie being leaked with a sex crime. Sorry. Hate all you want. Many of these are leaked on purpose.

Pics of Anthony Weiner's, um, weiner, were all over DU. Were those DUers that posted them guilty of sex crimes???

Come on, this is getting ridiculous.

Sex crime? Unless one or more of the victims are underage, no. If the photos were taken without the subject's knowledge and consent, that's a sex crime. If any of the victims are underage, or were underage when the photo was taken, then the FBI will seriously get involved and track down the pedophile.
