Jennifer Lawrence Nude Photo Leak Isn't A "Scandal." It's A Sex Crime.
As most of you probably know, someone somewhere dumped a deluge of purported nude photographs of a number of female celebrities online yesterday. The victims include the likes of Kate Upton, Victoria Justice, Ariana Grande, Kirsten Dunst, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Krysten Ritter, Yvonne Strahovski, and Teresa Palmer. But the focal point for this story has been Hunger Games/American Hustle actress Jennifer Lawrence, since the Oscar winning actress is perhaps the most famous actress on the planet right now. Without going into sordid details ( Justice and Grande have claimed their respective photos are fake, others have confirmed they are real), Id like to make two very specific points. Ms. Lawrence and the other victims have absolutely nothing to apologize for in terms of the contents of the photos or the nature in which they were leaked. The story itself should not be addressed as if it were a scandal, but rather what it is: A sex crime involving theft of personal property and the exploitation of the female body.

(75,480 posts)is a necessity. Sure it would be right to have the protections of society, but until laws are passed protecting women's rights we have to do the best to protect ourselves from any kind of exploitation.
I learned a long time ago that even though I may have the right of way, it's not going to stop someone determined to run me over so caution should always be first.
Now watch all the critics arrive.

But honestly ... if I were her granny I would be wagging my finger. It doesn't matter what a perfect world is like. It doesn't matter if its unfair, etc. It is what it is. PROTECT yourself because once its on the internet it is there forever. I wish her luck in getting judgment for this but sometimes the best lessons are the hardest. I speak from experience.

In the same way, we should be able to simultaneously hold the views that...
1) people should not HAVE to protect themselves from this sort of thing, and
2) people should try to protect themselves from this sort of thing.
In other words, "arming" a potential victim is not the same as blaming them.

(20,018 posts)What I'm saying is that we don't lambaste the locksmith for "blaming the victim".
But often on DU, anyone says anything about protecting yourself, they get jumped on as if they'd said the victim "had it coming".
La Lioness Priyanka
(53,866 posts)what you guys are subtly saying is very much in the vein that they had it coming, either by implying that they should have known or they should have used more security (as though you personally know how much or how little they had used) or that they should not have naked pictures in the first place.

Does anyone think for a minute that the FBI would care if a naked pic of anyone of us was suddenly "leaked?" I'm sure the FBI would get right on any complaint I made about this sort of thing. Riiggghhht.
Seriously?
And, I don't equate a celebrity selfie being leaked with a sex crime. Sorry. Hate all you want. Many of these are leaked on purpose.
Pics of Anthony Weiner's, um, weiner, were all over DU. Were those DUers that posted them guilty of sex crimes???
Come on, this is getting ridiculous.

(28,552 posts)... if these photos were in fact stolen from a server as purported, IT IS A CRIME. Period, end of story.
And I hope the perps are punished in accordance with the law which is pretty serious on such a matter.

DU is hilarious.
Did anyone care when Weiner's pics were out there? No, we blasted them all over DU in glee>
I'm not arguing the crime part of it. Of course it is. But, only those with money or status can get this even "looked at."
And I would imagine even then, that nothing will come of it.

I feel no sympathy with any of these celebrities. I wouldn't know the vast majority if they knocked on my door. Don't we have more important things to do? Like GOTV 2014?

(26 posts)Crime? Yes, indeed. Theft of any property is a crime. Distributing IP without permission is also a crime.
Sex crime? Unless one or more of the victims are underage, no. If the photos were taken without the subject's knowledge and consent, that's a sex crime. If any of the victims are underage, or were underage when the photo was taken, then the FBI will seriously get involved and track down the pedophile.
