Pamela Anderson Refuses ALS Ice Bucket Challenge because of Animal Testing

"Sorry, I can't bring myself to do your Ice bucket challenge," the post began. "I enjoy a good dare, It's always good to bring awareness - in fun, creative ways, I don't want to take away from that. I thought instead, I'd challenge ALS to stop animal testing."

The 47-year-old actress continued with claims describing how animals are used in scientific experiments.

"Recent experiments funded by the ALS Association, mice had holes drilled into their skulls, were inflicted with crippling illnesses, and were forced to run on an inclined treadmill until they collapsed from exhaustion. Monkeys had chemicals injected into their brains and backs and were later killed and dissected."

Anderson then quoted an FDA statistic stating that 92 out of 100 drugs that succeed in animal trials fail when used on humans.

"Trying to cure human diseases by relying on outdated and ineffective animal experiments isn’t only cruel—it’s a grave disservice to people who desperately need cures," she wrote.

And the other group is against fetal cell testing. So, I guess, no research for ALS is okay. pnwmom Aug 2014 #4

Funny. Animal testing of breast implants and silicone didn't seem to bother her. aikoaiko Aug 2014 #11
Refusing seems more charitable anyway, unless you're an idiot. flvegan Aug 2014 #12

Animal models are standard in science. You would not have cures for a lot of diseases without them.

What is her alternative? Can she, scientific genius that she is, come up with a valid alternative? I'm guessing no. Some hippy-dippy nonsense about animals is the best that she can do. Anyone who believes as she does is scientifically illiterate. If you had your way, many thousands of real people would die, because you think rats are more worthy than people. I don't.

I think the ice bucket thing is stupid for a lot of reasons, but not for this.

I had an experimental bone graft that used bone marrow from my hip to replace half my lower mandible by "growing" new bone tissue.

Later, I was sick when I learned how the new bone graft was developed: by shooting German Shepherds in the jaw with assault rifles, then trying new reconstruction techniques on them.

I guess I was a guinea pig, too. My graft failed 7 years later. It turned out that the technique worked well only for short-span grafts; long-span grafts couldn't handle the torque over time. It was experimental, after all.

I'd like to hear the ALS Association's response to Anderson. Is she correct about the testing and their sponsorship?

ETA: I forgot to mention that I discovered last night that I've received three icebucket challenges...

Dump the bucket on your head, donate $10. Refuse and donate $100. I can only go by what's on the internet, sorry if that's inaccurate.

So if one were truly charitable, they'd refuse and donate the bigger amount. They'd also do so without blabbing about it on social media to other random morons...definition of charity.

Let me know when thinking stops being the enemy here.

If I were challenged, I'd not dump some bucket over my head at the behest of idiots on the interwebs. I'd donate the $100 to where it does the most good and the least harm. Something new to think about, kids.
