Recursion
(56,582 posts)Both of them restaurants on H St. The rest of the area is just gentrified urbania with Chinese decorations. On the plus side, I now know the Chinese characters for "Starbucks", "Chipotle", and "Bed Bath & Beyond".
As to why they picked Chinatown? Good question.

(86,005 posts). . . I'm sure we'll find out, although I doubt it's as Chinatown centric as it sounds from the chant.
I do have to say that it's not the ethnic center that it may have been decades ago. It's more a center of moneyed interests which could be a target because of visibility and impact on tourism there.
Chinatown / Union Station
Mostly white-collar business by day, Judiciary Square, Union Station, and the Capitol are full of politicians, lawyers, and other Washington DC fat cats. You really can see it all in this part of town: motorcades, suits feasting on steaks during weekday power lunches, credit card-happy consumers, fashion plates, hipsters, and sports fans, all set to go-go beats being pounded out on trash cans.
Sundries/Entertainment
Once defined by its ethnic and culinary connections to China, a yuppie influx encouraged by the popularity of the Verizon Center has made Chinatown a haven for mid-career types looking to blow a wad on food, drink, and residence. Eat pizza at Matchbox, tapas at Jaleo, sushi at Momiji, grab a pint at The Dubliner, and an espresso at Chinatown Coffee (just don't ask for it over ice).
