Canada's Middle Class

Canada has both a single-payer health insurance system and strict banking regulations that have aided in avoiding the "bubble and burst" type economy we in the USA middle class suffer under.

Does it stands to reason that these are two MAJOR issues that have protected the middle class in Canada and decimated our middle class here in the USA?

When we take into consideration that 60 to 70 percent of all bankruptcies were due to health costs and the loss of retirement, savings, and home mortgages via a banking industry here that is allowed to gamble away our life savings then I would say yes.

I would add that they have stronger unions (no Taft-Hartley), more immigration (20% foreign-born to the US' 11%) and a better integration into the global economy (trade is 52% of GDP compared to the US 23%).

Stronger unions, a better safety net (including single payer), progressive taxes and better corporate regulation are what most progressive countries follow to achieve a strong middle class.
