1. Good start, but still needs a filter of some form.

I would suggest a hose or tube attached to the bottom that draws in air that first passes through moistened layers of gauze and then a container of activated charcoal, available at any good aquarium supply store.

13. Not really adequate. Activated charcoal needs to be there

sewn or taped into a packet under the vinegar soaked mask. It would also help to have it packed with gauze instead of just a surgical mask because you'd need as much vinegar soaked in as possible. That's what would allow you near enough to the canister to throw it back where it came from.

Just wear an oven glove when you do, those things are ferociously hot.

The arrangement shown would allow you to take the shortest route out of the gas cloud and not need to flush your eyes and mouth with water.

How to Guide – Makeshift Tear-Gas Mask

Handmade gas masks were an essential response to police actions during the 2013 mass protests in Istanbul. These events saw the Turkish government release a record amount of tear gas to disperse demonstrators. Protesters devised a way to protect themselves with basic materials like plastic bottles, elastic, and strips of insulation foam.

Since 2013, the idea spread and handmade gas masks have appeared on protestors as far away as Caracas, Venezuela.

16. The insulation strip is to provide a seal, not to filter air

It conforms to the contours of your face to eliminate gaps through which gas might get in. At the same time, it pads the sharp edges of the plastic bottle.

If you are going to go to that much trouble just get yourself a gas mask.

But it is easy to defend against. The Palestinians use onions under their eyes. That and a wet cloth will be ok in most situations. If you are exposed wash out your eyes with one part boric acid and three parts water (formula from the 60s). If acid not available just use water. Next you need to get it off your skin. You do that by applying mineral oil to the exposed skin. If no oil then use water followed by alcohol wash on the exposed areas. The alcohol cuts the sting to mere minutes instead of up to two hours.
