Under what circumstances can police use deadly force?

Had an interesting exchange with a commenter on a Ferguson article. Apparently this Cop believes you can kill a person for even throwing a drink in your face. Is he/she right? am I wrong? my first through when he/she said he/she was a cop was "yeeaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh right" lol.

He/she said: Wow... CNN just deleted my comment where I said it's the law if an officer is being assaulted, they can use deadly force. I guess CNN doesn't want people to know the truth!!

I said: if an officer feels his life is in danger, he can use deadly force. assaulted? No... you can't use deadly force for being assaulted. That could include anything like a woman throwing a drink in your face, which does not warrant killing her.

He/she said: Yes, you can. I'm a police officer, I know what I can and can't do!!

If you are in dager of being killed or seriously harmed. So throwing a drink in your face would not qualify. They could be arrested for assult though.

Because I want to make sure I never go into any place he is patrolling!

Here in Tallahassee, a police officer is under investigation for yelling stuff at a Florida Highway Patrol officer who was dealing with a traffic stop. Since some of the police involved felt that the distraction could be a hazard if he had been in a dangerous situation, it is being taken very seriously.

In addition, when the trooper pulled over the cop, the cop got our of his vehicle, put his hand behind his right hip and started tugging at something the trooper couldn't see. It turned out the cop was just pulling out his wallet, but the trooper reacted to the action by drawing down on the cop - for he knew at that point was the perpetrator was pulling a weapon from a belt holster.

The depositions are interesting reading. Apparently the FHP troopers who responded (they ended up with four or five troopers and one or two cops, plus possibly a Capital Police officer observing from a car across the street) thought the cop should be checked for a DUI. The cop refused to be tested, which under Florida law means automatic penalties but the troopers didn't push it. The cop later didn't remember the trooper pointing the gun at him - ANYONE with a normally functioning brain would remember having a gun pointing at them!

If the police officer you were exchanging comments with had been in the FHP trooper's place, he probably would have killed the Tallahassee police officer.
