"When you see the kind of force that's been used inFerguson, it really does make it appear that the
police department there is an occupying army in a
hostile territory and that is absolutely not what we
want to see in the U.S."

"If we are going to address the issue of crime in low-income areas and in African-American communities, it might be a good idea that instead of putting military style equipment into police departments in those areas, we start investing in jobs for the young people there who desperately need them.

(19,988 posts)Today he reminded viewers that years ago somebody could come out of high school with mediocre grades, not a particularly strong candidate for college, and still get a job that paid well in a factory or someplace and work their way into the middle class. Now, though, most of those kinds of jobs are gone and young people who aren't top students don't have much to look forward to. Somebody on the show pointed out that back during and after the Great Depression there wasn't much of an outcry when government created jobs--like there is today from Republican sociopaths.

(9,126 posts)States & Towns are cutting budgets to the bone for services. Crumbling infrastructure, no decent mass transportation, classrooms without paper or books, on and on. But we can always afford war--whether in our own country or abroad. I'm so fucking sick of it.

(5,169 posts)Not a bunch of silly keep em busy make work sit on your ass all day "jobs", but performing actual, useful tasks like: Picking up trash along the streets, roofing, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, lawn care, and general chores for the elderly and disabled, teaching the illiterate and non-English speakers how to read, write, and speak, installing new water and sewer pipes, farming, physical therapists, wheelchair van drivers...
The world needs a LOT more hands on laborers and fewer keyboard tappers (formerly known as pencil pushers)!
