Except for a federal background check, which can be easily implemented without big brother tactics, I will not support any new gun laws for the time being.
Not until I am convinced that the police in this country can behave themselves.
Anytime you support a new law, you are supporting the right of the state (i.e. the government) to enforce the said law, and that means police powers pursuant to that.
I don't want police busting down people's doors on the vague basis of "weapons charges" (whatever that means), which would probably be used by the police to justify more militarization in their ranks. Or giving police one more reason to arrest someone that the cops just want to arrest ("oh, well we didn't find any drugs on him, but oooh! He had an illegal gun" .
When I am convinced that the police can behave themselves and not abuses their powers and privileges, I'll go back to supporting more gun control.

(549 posts)Find out how many Americans are killed by guns every year. Now find out what percentage of those are killed by the police.
Once you report back with your results, we can discuss your position.

(106,886 posts)Especially clearer legal guidelines on probable cause. -
In United States criminal law, probable cause is the standard by which an officer or agent of the law has the grounds to obtain a warrant for, or as an exception to the warrant requirements for, making an arrest or conducting a personal or property search, etc. when criminal charges are being considered. It is also used to refer to the standard to which a grand jury believes that a crime has been committed. This term comes from the Fourth Amendment of the United States Constitution:
"Probable" in this case may relate to actual statistical probability, or to a general standard of common behavior and customs. The context of the word "probable" here is not exclusive to community standards and does not predate statistics, as some have suggested.[1]

(2,060 posts)abandon it. Not a doubt in my mind that the bad guys will be at the door one day. I am just as afraid of the cops as I am the bad guys, and believe the former group will not only reach par with the latter but exceed it in imparting fear. Fergusons are everywhere and increasing daily. And the S&P reaching new highs does not make a bit of difference.
