And we can boycott boycott boycott right-wing companies whose products and services help fund the conservative agenda and candidates.
For your convenience, here is a list of but a few of those companies we should avoid. Be sure to share with your family and friends. This is by no means a fully comprehensive list, but it is a good beginning.
As some of you noted, companies like Hobby Lobby and Papa Johns are good ones to avoid as well however, this list is focused more on larger operations such as those by News Corp and Koch Industries as you can see below.

(6,719 posts)man-made fabrics -- ?? what are we talking about here -- VERY big category as in all clothing has something in it that is man-made at this point. Are we going to demonstrate naked?
and I confess to having watched Cosmos on Fox.
Forgive me!

(19 posts)This was the first time I have seen National Geo on a list of RW companies therefore NAT Geo is now verboten in my household and has been blocked permanently.
True Story, if anyone really cares, a few years ago my SIL came to visit, the guest room in the house has a TV in it, the next AM my SIL asked why Fox will not work on the TV even though it is listed as a channel that is available. I told her FOX or any other RW Propaganda Network or RW product is not allowed in this house. Well she though blocking channels was extreme, yet she has been quoting "Dr" Laura for years, and said I should unblock it for her. I told her the Hampton Inn is 5 miles away has availability and Fox on the TV, I will be more then happy to drive you there if you would like. She stayed 1 more night then cut her trip short by a few days. She has never stayed at our house again. win-win if ya ask me.
Thanks for the list of what to avoid.

(43,869 posts)It's very difficult not to do business with conservatives. Do we research every company, every restaurant, every doctor's office, etc. that we consider using?
Some companies are on my 'no way, no how' list like Chick-fil-a and Hobby Lobby. Others are on my 'last resort' list (I seriously needed a toilet plunger in the middle of the night once and Wal-mart was the only open store that had one!)
I won't miss Star Wars Ep. VII when it hits - and it's from 20th Century Fox.

(18,219 posts)I don't have the technical ability to watch anything with Hulu, but a lot of people do.
And I find it really hard to avoid all the clothing materials.....we don't even know what is in most of our clothing anymore. It used to be that a t-shirt and jeans were just cotton----ah, the good old days. But I definitely try.
Stellar
(5,644 posts)what technical abilities does one need to watch Hulu?
RebelOne
(30,947 posts)All you need is high-speed Internet, which everyone has nowadays. I can get it just fine with my Comcast cable connection.
Stellar
(5,644 posts)I can get it fine with this piece of crap AT&T also. It's just an app. I thought maybe s/he may have been referring to something new.
Curmudgeoness
(18,219 posts)and I don't, I would need a television that would allow for a connection to the computer. I still have a console television from the 80's and it works fine so I don't want to get rid of it.
But.....if I were to have a TV that the computer could somehow be hooked to, I would have no idea how to do the connection. That is how low-tech I am. I wouldn't know if I needed a cable, or what kind of cable, or if there is a special channel you have to put on the TV to allow it to work. Let's put it this way, people who know about technology don't think it is a big deal, but I was given a cell phone a few months ago for work, and I couldn't turn it on because I didn't know that you had to hold the "power" button down for several seconds---I just kept pushing it and the phone would not turn on. A no-brainer to you, huh?
Stellar
(5,644 posts)I use a system called Roku (it's about as large as a deck of cards) and it comes with every kind of hook-up that you would need. If your TV has a red/white/yellow hook-up on the back...you're good to go.
https://www.roku.com/
Check it out.
btw: you must have wireless internet.
Curmudgeoness
(18,219 posts)The only connection on the TV is a screw-in connection that a cable can connect to (by the cable company or the converter box that I use). There is, however, a white, yellow, and red plug-in thingy on the back of the converter box. Hmmmm.
Stellar
(5,644 posts)But if you happen to go to a big box store or where ever they sell the Roku...they could probably answer that question for you. It really is simple enough. From someone that know nothing about technology myself.
Sorry.
Curmudgeoness
(18,219 posts)don't even know what a console TV is. But thanks. I have a feeling that it would work with the converter box (you remember those boxes that they gave rebates for when the programming on TV all went from analog to digital and old TV's wouldn't get a signal anymore?)
Stellar
(5,644 posts)but I don't want to tell you anything wrong so that you will become angry with me as I myself am not a tech wiz, remember? LOL! Let me see if I can find my converter box and get back to you, OK?
btw: console TV...that's like a blast from the past man. It's been awhile since I've had one or have even seen one. I'm sure the kids in those stores wouldn't know much about such an antiquated instrument. But I would imagine that those tubes might be one of the things that might throw them for a moment, and besides, it wouldn't have the red/yellow or white connections on it either.
Curmudgeoness
(18,219 posts)one of the IT guys at work could have it. He wants to do some retro thing will new technology in it. I don't try to understand what he is talking about. He said he didn't know there were any still out there.
And there is only one connection on the back of this TV---a little place to screw things in, like a cable TV line.

(21,020 posts)post (again) the running list I have going on all the places/products that we at DU have been told we should boycott (I've posted it before, and believe me, there must be at least 25 or 30 items on it)
And here we have, what...another 30 or more?
I too choose not to live my life this way. And yes, because it's too damned difficult at my age to remember all of that shit. And who the hell wants to (seriously) keep a notebook full of all the products and places we, as "good DUers", should not patronize?
Are people still boycotting BP?
Papa John's pizza?
Coke? Madea? Toyota? Goodwill? Staples?
Are people stepping up and boycotting everything they're supposed to, or is this just the latest shiny object du jour, meant only to make people feel like they're actually doing something constructive?

(463 posts)Is 20th century Fox owned by Murdoch? That's what I want to know.
Perhaps Simpson reruns and the show itself can be ported to other cable channels.
tammywammy
(26,582 posts)That is publicly traded with Murdoch as the CEO & President. Also even if you watch syndicated episodes you're technically still contributing to the parent (they make money off syndication).

(15 posts)I'm sure these company's contributesome heavily in their own wayto the right-wing. The agenda of the right is more and more clear to me these daysuse the public airwaves to manipulate, control and misdirect the public. Then use democracy to hire politicians who will use their power to further the cause of corporate profit. Where's the investment in people and their future, wheres the safety net, wheres the court system, EPA, FDA that protects us, it's all about to be run over!
Lycra and Georgia-Pacific are a little tough to avoid in my limited access neck of the woods but I don't use the rest anyways.

(10,044 posts)Not sure of 20th Century Fox, I don't watch many movies although I used to.
I've read Harper Collins book and I'm surprised they are on the list. Many are critical religious books the right would not like.
The Simpsons is my weakness. I enjoy them.
The rest of the list I never heard of or don't frequent.
Thanks for posting.

(6,151 posts)My needs and means are pretty minimal at this age anyway. Grow a lot of my own food, buy used goods most of the time except for curbside vintage, etc. Had to give up going to auctions because I always came home with great stuff that I still don't really need, and the house is crammed full already. Recently snagged a huge mahogany desk curbside that's too big to fit through my narrow doors (old house, bought at auction) so now it's on my porch serving as a big plant stand.
Time to quit!

(22,000 posts)That includes the following publishers that are under the HC umbrella: Hachette, Holtzbrinck/Macmillan, Penguin Putnam, Random House, and Simon & Schuster.
Unfortunately I was at Powell's in Portland a couple weeks ago and bought three books that fall under HC. One of them is Lawrence Lessig's book Republic Lost. The other two were about North Korea.
I've been going to school for 4 years and MacMillan is one of the biggest publishers of textbooks.
I do watch film and tv programs that are on those channels, but alas I get them for free (not on Hulu). The same with books for the most part.
I think people can try as hard as they can not to buy or use products from that list, but it is near impossible to avoid everyone. Technically if you turn on your tv and watch a movie that is part of your cable subscription you are contributing money to one of them. Probably the best you can hope for is 85-90% if you are really careful.

(260 posts)I avoid Koch products like the plague, but I don't plan on boycotting all 20th Century Fox material. I think that if you set your standards too high, you'll inevitably fail because you're only human. Plus, you'll miss out on great shows that may not agree with what their owners want to peddle, like the Simpsons and Family Guy.
If you really want to boycott something, boycott Coors. The Coors company has been funding ultra-right-wing groups for over a century, the supported apartheid and they helped create the Heritage Foundation. Ban that!

(9,808 posts)I make 80% of our clothing, and it's almost impossible to get certain fabrics without some lycra/spandex, especially knits. Tights are especially bad, and without it, they just don't work.
On the other hand, I tend to buy my fabrics at deep discount on the secondary market, and I do have a deep stash from which to work for a while.
An alternative to tights... That will take some thought.

(32,052 posts)In its original run, it was owned by Embassy Television and later Columbia Pictures Television; Sony now owns syndication rights to the show.
If you don't want to put money in Rupert Murdoch's pockets, fine. Just make sure you know what shows Fox actually owns the rights to. Fox stopped profitting off Married...with Children in 1997, haha.
Fox network shows that are not actually produced by Fox studios include: Living Single, Fringe, and Beverly Hills, 90210.
I think it's kind of a stretch to boycott Fox entertainment just to say no to Fox News.
