(62,276 posts)I've really not been impressed with how the media has been treated here.
I think his heart is in the right place, but I think that's the wrong thing to do, don't mess with the media.

(8,554 posts)Lawrence O'Donnell talked to her tonight on his show, she said that a pick-up had pulled up just as the cops were dispersing the crowd. The driver asked if anyone needed a ride out of the area and a bunch of young protesters jumped into the back. She said that so many got on, that it was almost scraping bottom as it pulled away. The cops pulled that truck over a little ways down the road and she ran down there and took pictures of them arresting everybody in it. Her name was Amanda. I was on her twitter page but closed it out and now I can't remember her hashtag. (deleted all my cookies about a half hour ago)
That truck is where the guns and molotov cocktail were found. The driver must have been trying to use the kids as cover, since Capt. Johnson said they'd been tracking him. But they arrested every one of the young protesters, minutes after they'd jumped in. And the cops were really not pleased that Amanda was trying to get a pic of it, according to what she told O'Donnell

(62,276 posts)Got on their knees. But they got up right afterward and got back on the sidewalk. The reporters have been very compliant, the whole time, I have been posting about it all night. I want the reporters to be non-compliant, for crying out loud. It's their right to report.

(62,276 posts)And I might do something stupid, maybe throw a rock. That's bad. But I can see myself doing it. We didn't have those in Seattle 99 and we only threw teddy bears, but you probably know what I'm saying.

(8,554 posts)When he said that the "media glamorizes the activities of a disruptive few" all I could think of was when they fired off all the smoke bombs, tear gas, and blasted everyone with LRADs.
That's obviously what he doesn't want the media to show.
If he says he's inspired by the people of Ferguson, why the hell did they arrest 31 of them tonight? He said himself that the protesters weren't aggressive.
joshcryer
(62,276 posts)I think about it from a completely different angle, though. Because police agitation is going to cause more protesters to come out and resist. He doesn't want that at all. I think there is an absolute right to report on excessive police actions. The machine in particular serves no positive purpose. It's literally a nightmare machine. I may have nightmares about it tonight.

That LRAD crap is something else!
joshcryer
(62,276 posts)He made a dumb tweet about them being bullets or something (claimed he was joking or whatever). I wished I had them on an iPhone recording streamed to YouTube through headphones! Stupid ass machine and whoever invented it needs help. It's not doing what it's intended to do. It might scare off irregulars (people who weren't protesting but were in the area and seeing what was going on), but protesters are going to be seriously annoyed by it.

(62,276 posts)I watched it the whole night, the reporters were extremely cooperative. Even when they were being led around the city to various checkpoints which sent them to random locations.
steve2470
(37,457 posts)I don't see that at all.
joshcryer
(62,276 posts)So the media being there and potentially making protesters more active, is a good thing, that's the whole point of the bill of rights. Free speech, free press. Simple. Free as in freedom, of course.
Basically I see it as victim blaming even if some of the media is glamorizing it or putting their heads out there and making the drama excessive.

(62,276 posts)First it was "reporters" then it was "credentialed reporters" because a lot of individuals on the streets would just pull their phone out and claim they were journalists (which, in fact, in the information age, they become as soon as they start recording).
