1962 Ferrari becomes most expensive car ever sold at auction

Get this: The car crashed in a race killing the driver, which is why they think the price of the car will exceed expectations.

A 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta became the most expensive car in the world Thursday when it was auctioned off for $38 million, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Even though the final price tag easily beat the previous record-holder -- a Mercedes W196 that sold last year for $30 million -- it's still much less than the projected $50 million the car was expected to bring in at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

The hype, in part, was because this particular car is the only GTO to ever be involved in a fatal crash.

The 250 GTO is one of the holy grails of the sports car world.
