Dutch man returns Israeli Holocaust award after Gaza relatives killed

Dutch man returns Israeli Holocaust award after Gaza relatives killed

Tel Aviv (dpa) - A 91-year-old Dutch man who was awarded Israel‘s Righteous Among the Nations title for saving a Jewish boy during World War II has returned the medal, saying six relatives were killed by the Israeli military during its offensive in the Gaza Strip.

In a letter to the Israeli ambassador to the Netherlands published by Haaretz newspaper on Friday, Henk Zanoli said his mother‘s husband was killed at the Mauthausen concentration camp, while other relatives also perished during the German occupation of the country.

His mother hid a young Jewish boy "in her home risking both her own life and that of her children," until the Allies liberated the Netherlands in 1945. The boy, whose parents died in the camps, eventually immigrated to Israel.
