Police shootings: What black parents tell their sons

Associated Press
Jeremiah Parker, 4, stands with his mother, Shatara, at a protest Wednesday in Ferguson, Mo. The fatal shooting by police of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager, has prompted protests and unrest.

When I was growing up, my parents often gave me pep talks that were different from the ones my white male friends got from their parents.

However, my parents wanted me to know that every time I walked out the front door, I was going to be judged as a "black male" first.

What does that mean? It means knowing how to deal with police and law enforcement when confronted or stopped.

'Cross the bloody river to the other side
41 shots, cut through the night
You're kneeling over his body in the vestibule
Praying for his life

Is it a gun, is it a knife
Is it a wallet, this is your life
It ain't no secret (it ain't no secret)
It ain't no secret (it ain't no secret)
No secret my friend
You can get killed just for living in your American skin

My wish is the same and anyone's who isn't an ingrained racist.. from your link, she..

"I wish people could be judged based on their character instead of their skin color or dialect. I'm not sure that this will happen in my lifetime, but I can hope that it will happen in my daughter's."

Mahalo, she~Only hope our public outcry will bring about positive change, This Time!

I grew up in an upper middle class neighborhood.

I still remember an older white lady screaming at me and my brother to get out of her neighborhood when we were simply walking home from school.

Funny thing..we lived there too. Where were we supposed to go?
