Posting porn to any website or comments section other than a dedicated porn site is an attack.

Need we say more? Why is this contentious? Why should this be a gender specific issue?

Posting it to a cat fancy forum is an attack on that website. Posting it to an audiophile forum is an attack on that website. Posting it to DU is an attack on this website. Posting it to an online gaming website is an attack on that website. Posting it to the BBC comments about a news article is an attack on the BBC website. Etc, etc, etc.

Posting it to kink.com would probably be welcomed, depending on copyright issues.

It's not really that complicated.

edit: Remember the scenes in the movie Fight Club where the Brad Pitt character inserted single frames of himself into the movies projected in the theater was an attack on the audience, as another example, that doesn't involve the www.

1. If course you're right, but it's a wonderfully convenient excuse to use.

"It's not really that complicated..."

If course you're right, but it's a wonderfully convenient excuse to use to rationalize it as something other than what it is.

I bet if they're reading DU they're absolutely loving the attention.

9. I suspect they chose Jezebel because they thought it would get a big reaction.

I suspect it continues to happen on Jezebel because of (incompetent?) sys admins who can't or won't turn off anonymous hot linking to pictures. Or maybe GAWKER (the parent company) even likes the extra attention. This is sure bringing them attention from people who otherwise wouldn't go there, right?

11. OK. You also asked earlier why it's a gender-specific issue.

There are a couple of Alternate History forums that I frequent that were subject to a very similar attack from a troll a while back.....unfortunately, it appears that an innocent person ended up receiving the blame for all that(I did a little detective work of my own, TBH).

12. Ok then, so why don't the Jezebel website admins disable anonymous hotlinking of remote images?

They could solve this problem if they really wanted to.

"She could have stopped the attack if she wanted to."

The question is, why are the attacks happening in the first place?

You think it's just a coincidence that so many women bloggers report this sort of harassment? That rape porn is posted on a site that is no doubt frequented by rape survivors?

If someone persisted in posting Confederate iconography on the NAACP website, your response would be a) to doubt it was racism and b) to castigate the web managers for not stopping it? As opposed to condemning it as a racist attack?

It wasn't even a political or controversial website. It just became too much work playing whackamole for the inappropriate content some users kept posting. There are trolls on the internet, and that's not likely to change anytime soon.
