Hundreds of years ago, yes, so hopefully by the year 2400 the different Islamic sects will treat each other like Episcopalians and Methodists do today.

(33,580 posts)Evangelicals and JW's live in. The enlightenment did a lot to end laws and actions based on religion. Maybe these countries where the atrocities you satirize take place have their own enlightenment, things will improve.
As long as they let their religion dictate behavior, this kind of thing is apt to happen.

(12,659 posts)I remember some of the horrors people who tried to live peacefully in Belfast went through, when your house could be bombed just because your kid was seen cutting across the wrong streets in his way home.
It wasn't that long go - a few decades.

(5,169 posts)Between the Christians, who can be intolerant assholes, but in modern times are not chasing down people of different denominations and coldly murdering them, while cheering and videotaping their acts of brutality, and the people (if we can call them that) in Syria and Iraq who are doing exactly that very thing.

I will say in Africa we sttill have Muslim and Christian tribes killing each other and doing these horrible things.

That's how many non-Sunni have been shot, point blank in the head.
How about hundreds? Dozens? Were any at all killed last month?
Lots of evil going around, but Operation Rescue is unlikely to trigger a nuclear war. ISIL is capable of it, and looking forward to it.

Your religion isn't better than any other, its' criminal element is only contained by a more stable country and a great expenditure of police and health resources that could be better used HELPING THE POOR LIKE THAT GUY IN THE SANDALS WANTED.
You're not better than those people. You just live in a functioning society. No thanks to the evangelical right.

(24,979 posts)about how all those people out there are animals, not like civilized Westerners who don't behead people. (Unless a drone strike happens to knock off their head, you know? We always behead collaterally, so to speak.)
With most people who do this it's a psychological device for distancing oneself from the crimes of one's own culture, one's own nation. The U.S. government launched a war of aggression, destroyed one nation directly and helped destroy another (Syria had to absorb four million Iraqi refugees for years, and of course the faction that became IS were originally set up by Gulf States and CIA).
As a means of dealing with the situation in Iraq, the U.S. started a genocide among factions that it armed heavily. Now the latest round of ethnic cleansing is underway and Americans who think they're smart and enlightened tell themselves such stories to pretend they had nothing to do with it. It's all because of their religion, nothing to do with economics, history, imperialism, etc.

Thank goodness our President is far wiser and better informed than the people who would let these monsters run unimpeded!

(24,979 posts)The Gulf States should have never supported it, and the U.S. shouldn't have thus armed it indirectly.

People are NOT being beheaded in Iraq and Syria? This was all special effects?
Or it's not our problem, shut up, we should not be bombing?
