'Sexist' music videos should be age restricted, says report

Music videos should be age rated in the same way as feature films and video games because of endemic sexism and racism, according to a new report by women’s groups.

The study criticised videos by Calvin Harris, Basement Jaxx, Robin Thicke and Miley Cyrus for misogynistic depictions of women.

....

Dr Maddy Coy, the author of the study, said: "This paper sets out what is known about music videos – that sexist and racist stereotypes are endemic – and that this can be related to harm in the real world.”

The eight-page review of academic research found there was evidence that people who viewed misogynistic music videos had a greater tolerance of racism, sexism and even rape.

Female performers in music videos were likely to be "checked out" by other performers or the camera, often with a concentration on their breasts, bottoms or other erotic zones, it said.
