http://www.motherjones.com/environment/2014/08/bottled-water-california-drought"Bottled-water drinkers, we have a problem: there's a good chance that your water comes from California, a state experiencing the third driest year on record.
The details of where and how bottling companies get their water are often quite murky, but generally speaking, bottled water falls into two categories. The first is "spring water," or groundwater that's collected, according to the EPA, "at the point where water flows naturally to the earth's surface or from a borehole that taps into the underground source." About 55 percent of bottled water in the US is spring water, including Crystal Geyser and Arrowhead.
The other 45 percent comes from the municipal water supply, meaning that companies, including Aquafina and Dasani, simply treat tap waterthe same stuff that comes out of your faucet at homeand bottle it up. (Weird, right?)..."

(14,449 posts)bottled water just tastes better. We supposedly have the best tasting water (Arnold Maryland).....I don't believe so at all. However, have a bottled water and it tastes very good to me. I buy the bottles that are 24 bottles at Safeway for 3 bucks and recycle every bottle to save on the Earth. However, any sniff of snow and you just may be out of luck buying bottled water for the week.

(19,841 posts)Just get a reusable (non-leaching) water bottle and take it with you.
A lot of what is sold as bottle water is not so good for you anyway. This website has info about how to evaluate bottled water:

Also there's the problem of pthalates (from plastic):
Recent research suggests that there could be cause for concern, and that the issue should be studied closely. Studies have shown that chemicals called phthalates, which are known to disrupt testosterone and other hormones, can leach into bottled water over time. One study found that water that had been stored for 10 weeks in plastic and in glass bottles contained phthalates, suggesting that the chemicals could be coming from the plastic cap or liner. Although there are regulatory standards limiting phthalates in tap water, there are no legal limits for phthalates in bottled water -- the bottled water industry waged a successful campaign opposing the FDA proposal to set a legal limit for these chemicals.
Also consider the fact that only a quarter of plastic bottles actually are recycled.

Plenty of good reasons not to buy bottled water. And all the better if it leaves more water for Californians.

(17,641 posts)to let in bacteria. In France they did a study on this. That is why it is sold in glass bottles.

(19,841 posts)Found this article on it from England (I'm sure there are more but probably suppressed in the US):
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/7763038/Bottled-water-contains-more-bacteria-than-tap-water.html
A team of scientists found that 70 per cent of popular bottled water brands available in shops had high levels of bacteria. The researchers from Ccrest Laboratories in Canada found that tap water had less bacteria than bottled water. Microbiologist Dr Sonish Azam, of Ccrest Laboratories, said bottled water did not live up to its claims or purity.
---------------
She said: "Heterotrophic bacteria counts in some of the bottles were found to be in revolting figures of one hundred times more than the permitted limit."
Dr Azam said tighter controls needed to be put on bottled water manufacturers.
"Bottled water is not expected to be free from microorganisms but the [level] observed in this study is surprisingly very high," she said.
Dr Azam said there was no need to drink bottled water if tap water was of a good quality. "Unsurprisingly, the consumer assumes that since bottled water carries a price tag, it is purer and safer than most tap water," she added.
