Pastor John Hagee: God Thinks ‘Nasty’ Welfare Recipients Should Get Job Or Starve

In his sermon at the Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, Pastor John Hagee explained that it is “God’s position” that welfare recipients should get a job or expect to starve, according to Right Wing Watch.

Stating that America has an underclass of citizens dependent upon help from the government equal to the population of Spain, Hagee asserted that there is a division in America, “Those who pay double through taxes, and those who get a free ride. This is not justice, and this is not the American way.”

While admitting that there are some unfortunate Americans who need help, Hagee admonished others to get off the couch and get a job. “To those of you who are sick, to those of you who are elderly, to those of you who are disabled, we gladly support you,” he said as his voice began to rise. “To the healthy who can work but won’t work, get your nasty self off the couch and go get a job!”

Hagee went on to say that “America has rewarded laziness and we’ve called it welfare,” before adding “The Bible says ‘The man who does not work, should not eat.’ I know the liberals hate that verse, but read it and weep! It’s God’s position.” The video does not show Hagee reading Matthew 25:35 where occasionally-employed itinerant carpenter and Son of God Jesus Christ reportedly said, “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/08/06/pastor-john-hagee-god-thinks-nasty-welfare-recipients-should-get-a-job-or-starve/

In Hagee's case I'd say "being what you are sure beats having to look for a real job!"

Pastor Hagee, famously a good friend of John McCain, should probably do a little better job of keeping up with the times. I wonder if he had any advice for wealthy folks who just keep accumulating wealth while their fellow citizens go homeless? Jesus certainly did. As did Isaiah, Ezekiel, Jeremiah, Micah, Amos and Moses. I'll see his one lonely verse and raise him several books of the Bible.

A true swine among men. Liberals are the enemy of authoritarians-fundamentalism, Jesus was a liberal and Hagee is a rotting pigman that loves to control the lives of families.

What is funny and tragic is that the statement was made to endtimers in the Thesolonian commune, of Pauls day who thought that since Jesus was coming back they could shirk work in the Christian vineyards and get paid for preaching the word.

Jesus said this of the poor. Look at the lilies and how they grow. They don't work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are."

have you noticed that most of the loudest voices against welfare are from those who sit on their butt all day, creating nothing of value? I would hardly call what Hagee does "work".

Maybe if he got off his lazy butt and got out there and helped people, there would be fewer people on welfare.

Patriarchal assholes, especially religious ones, are utterly blind to the amount of work it takes to produce and raise young children because it is work they are too exalted to be called upon to do.

Sadly, he is also uneducable.

The best thing to do with people who believe this sort of horseshit is to yell "YOU BOUGHT THAT?" and walk away giggling and twirling your index finger next to your temple.

They have to be ridiculed. It's the only way.

for the likes of McDonald's and Walmart and don't earn enough to make ends meet, having to rely on food stamps just to be able to eat. Is he okay with taxpayers subsidizing billionaires like the Waltons so they don't have to pay their employees a living wage? Pastor John Hagee thinks nasty welfare recipients should get jobs. What jobs? Where are they going to work? President Obama wants a massive USA infrastructure rebuilding program, which will create jobs. But Boehner isn't going to let that happen. I suppose the good Pastor John Hagee opposes creating jobs for the ones he says should get jobs.

We can change our financial circumstances by putting into practice the Bible's teaching of "Give, and it shall be given unto you"!

You can change your financial situation, alright...by moving money from your wallet directly to Hagee.

That must be what he's talking about here, since he has such a low opinion of welfare recipients.

Unfortunately in my travel trailer is a TV and one of the two channels I get has him on every day.
Its a bizarre combination of charismatic southern preaching mixed with various, repetitive hand gestures. He raises and lowers his tone deftly to emphasize phrases or words that fit into his narrative. Occasionally he will throw in a long, smug joke, usually sexist, at the expense of the women in his congregation. The camera will pan the congregation and the women laughing at his jokes.

Hagee's performances are not biblically sound. He pushes politics from the pulpit and should lose his tax exempt status. At best, its cheap theater, good for some laughs.

USA, a majority of working-age welfare recipients actually do work, but are poor due to low pay; and thirdly, the 'if a man will not work neither shall he eat' quote is, in its context, an attack on people who joined early Christian communities as hangers-on without intending to contribute - not a general comment on society.

And fourthly, Hagee is utterly barking on many subjects, but eats quite well as a result of getting lots of money for promoting his barking views.
