Insurance company pays out $21K settlement to 73-year-old in buckets of small change

Andres Carrasco and his "settlement."
What a bunch of a-holes.
Andres Carrasco filed a lawsuit in 2012 against Adriana’s Insurance Service, Inc. alleging he was physically assaulted by one of the company's employees.
After agreeing to a settlement with Andres Carrasco in June, Adriana’s Insurance decided to deliver the funds in the form of a check -- and buckets and buckets of quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies.

The guy is a senior citizen and recently had a hernia operation and is unable to lift the buckets. Apparently eight Adriana's Insurance Service employees arrived at Carrasco's lawyers office and just started dropping off buckets of loose change that amounted to around $21,000.
"I am disappointed by the way Adriana's treats their customers and the elderly,” Carrasco said in the statement. "We might be poor, but we are people too."
Unsurprisingly, when contacted by the press, Adriana's Insurance Service was unavailable for comment.
Not really sure that they could say anything to defend such a cruel and childish action anyway.

A 1932-1964 Washington quarter is now worth 3.57 ( melt value) at current silver price of $19.74 / troy ounce.

The chances are there are enough coins in those buckets to have some metal value, plus face value.

At least I thought it used to be. Or has it become common enough that the law isn't taken seriously?

...some local manager's idea of a "joke". I agree that virtually every insurance company has the ability to be petty but someone put a lot of work into this. 21k in coin isn't something you pick up digging through the couch pillows.

Might be from on high but this just feels like a street level decision...probably a local agent who's been taking chit over this for a while.

If you have a relative you HATE, send them here.

If you have a senior citizen you want to get revenge on, send them here.

If you want Adriana's team of professional lawyers to spend hours filling up buckets with pennies, send your business here.

This dumping of thousands of pounds of pennies maliciously against a senior wasn't a knee-jerk reaction that can be easily understood as a momentary lapse of judgement. This was a malicious, pre-meditated, planned, and carefully calculated over time and carried out to completion without ANY care for the consequences, not realizing social media would call them out on it. NOW I hear the company is responding to calls that "they are mis-understood"

boohoo

These people are pure scum. Calling an insurance company scum is almost redundant though. These people bring it to a new level. What they did to Andres Carrasco os wholly unacceptable, and they should be punished severely for it. These people are evil, I will never use their product, and will do my best to make sure everyone I know doesn't use them as well. Here's hoping that you bastards lose your jobs, business, and homes.

you guys suck ass. the state should investigate you guys and take away your license to conduct business in the state of california. your lawyers that allowed this should also be disbarred and have their license to practice law in california revoked.

Wondering if since he could not lift the buckets if all the change got into his possession or some of it disappeared. That might lead to a claim they didn't pay.

These pscyhopaths need to be sued again. They should have just paid for damages for the assault by their employee, apologize and have done with it.

They are sick and should be investigated for other scams or some crimes done...

There is some law about not paying over a certain amount of money in small change.
