Democrats Smashing Republicans With Their Own Wedge Issues
by Justin Rosario • August 5, 2014 •

Once upon a time, all Republicans wanted to talk about was abortion and homosexuals. They loved it! They could stand on a stage, thump their bibles and praise Republican Jesus™. Republicans preached hate and their constituents ate it up. Now? They would give anything if Democrats would shut the hell up about it:

“{Democratic Senator Mark} Udall is running his entire campaign on social issues,” said Brad Dayspring of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. “All they talk about is birth control, ‘personhood,’ abortion.”

So will many other Democrats this fall. They aim to match President Obama’s feat in 2012, when the incumbent used topics such as same-sex marriage and contraception as weapons to offset his vulnerability on the economy. That they would even try while facing the older, whiter, more conservative midterm electorate shows how thoroughly the politics of social issues have turned upside down.

Two things happened here: Republicans overplayed their hand with draconian restrictions on reproductive rights and the country shifted wildly to the left on marriage equality. Now the Democrats are holding Republicans responsible for their rhetoric and actions and it’s killing the GOP.

snip//

Basically, Republicans are the victims of their own success. They spent so much time and energy identifying themselves with being anti-reproductive rights and anti-gay, it’s taking very little effort for Democrats to use that against them now that those positions have become unpopular with the American electorate.

Republicans, of course, think this is unfair. They spent decades using social wedge issues to great effect and now that it’s become an albatross around their neck, how dare the Democrats keep telling people all the stuff that Republicans have said?! Personally, I don’t know what they’re so upset about. The Bible they claim to love so much is quite clear about this:

For whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. – Galatians 6

Not Jesus's own words, but ones he affirmed. Also a non-Biblical one - what goes around comes around.

Message from me to the GOP: "Please stop digging. Your hole's deep enough.".

Then again... would the GOP listen to the likes of me? I'm sure someone's still digging away back there making it a bigger and more obvious hole.

We're loud, proud and not afraid to hurt a conservative's feelings!

While those are the biggest wedge issues, I wish that the poor, minorities and emigrants were included in the list. The GOP has been going after all of them with a vengeance, too.

Thanks for the thead!

1. Posse Comitatus, Secession, nullification, the Civil War and States Rights: "States rights" used to be a dog-whistle issue for conservatives. You talk about 'states rights' and a lot of bottom-feeding racists hear them talking about 'Jim Crow,' nullification of federal laws by states, the right of states to secede from the union (which most SANE Americans view as TREASON) etc. The only problem is, if you blow a dog whistle LOUD ENOUGH eventually EVERYBODY can hear it.

How about THIS time we get some people to ASK THEM EXACTLY WHAT THEY MEAN by these statements. "What EXACTLY did you MEAN by 'second amendment remedies?' What EXACTLY do you MEAN by 'Blah people?' Exactly what is your position on THE BUNDY RANCH STANDOFF etc."

2. The MINIMUM WAGE. It would be nice if we asked each candidate: A) DO YOU THINK THERE SHOULD EVEN BE a minimum wage?, and B) If so, are you in favor of RAISING IT?

3. REPEALING OBAMACARE (AKA 'taking people's health care insurance AWAY.'): "What's your position of REPEAL and/or DEFUNDING of OBAMACARE? What? Now you just want to 'improve it?' Gee...that's funny, because YOU VOTED TO REPEAL IT 52 TIMES! Suddenly your position has softened because everybody, including 70% of Republicans are now 'satisfied' with it?"

4. IMPEACHMENT: "ARE you in favor of IMPEACHING the President? And if so, FOR WHAT exactly? If you are elected/re-elected in November, and somebody in the House brings an IMPEACHMENT vote against the President, WOULD YOU VOTE YES or NO?" (Force EVERY GOP candidate to confess that, if given the opportunity, they'd waste the government's time and money on another impeachment circus, like they did with Clinton.)

5. SENDING U.S. TROOPS BACK INTO IRAQ, and/or SENDING U.S. WEAPONS AND ADVISERS TO UKRAINE: The chickenhawk vs. non-interventionist wings of the GOP are set to fight a civil war. Why not give them a hand in starting it???

and

6. For incumbent GOP only :" DID YOU VOTE TO DEFUND THE GOVERNMENT back in 2013? If so...WHY? Better yet...would you/will you do it again???" When the GOP shut down the government last year, their ratings plummeted faster than a turd down a flushed toilet. So, they re-opened the government, and everybody soon forgot that they ever did it. IT'S OUR JOB TO REMIND THEM!

A lot of our friends were hurt financially by that government shutdown. The GOP needs to be punished for causing it.

Self-righteousness and hypocrisy.
Most of the "religious right" are pretty guilty of both of them

Just sayin'
