Over the last few months, you may have read the coverage surrounding an article, co-authored by Stephen Hawking, discussing the risks associated with artificial intelligence. The article suggested that AI may pose a serious risk to the human race. Hawking isnt alone there Elon Musk and Peter Thiel are both intellectual public figures who have expressed similar concerns (Thiel has invested more than $1.3 million researching the issue and possible solutions).
The coverage of Hawkings article and Musks comments have been, not to put too fine a point on it, a little bit jovial. The tone has been very much look at this weird thing all these geeks are worried about. Little consideration is given to the idea that if some of the smartest people on Earth are warning you that something could be very dangerous, it just might be worth listening.
This is understandable artificial intelligence taking over the world certainly sounds very strange and implausible, maybe because of the enormous attention already given to this idea by science fiction writers. So, what has all these nominally sane, rational people so spooked?

(9,126 posts)My major was Philosophy at a school you've heard of. When I began as a sophomore, we all complained about the posh buildings for business and science that were being built by huge corporate endowments. We whined into our coffee about how Philosophy was passé and the department would crumble from neglect. Then, upon returning for fall semester my senior year, I walked in to find construction crews refurbishing the building and new furniture wrapped in plastic. I asked one of my rather colorful professors what was going on. He said a few of the professors in Logic, Philosophy of Language, and Philosophy of the Mind had gotten HUGE contracts from the US military. When I asked what for, he cracked up and guffawed, "Artificial Intelligence!" So yes, I believe all the portents of doom.

I'm very much more worried about humans without intelligence than machines with it.
Hawking also chimed in about the supposed threat from extraterrestrials a while ago, and I feel he missed the boat with that one as well.
