An Omaha couple with seven children were killed in a one-vehicle accident near West Point, Nebraska, over the weekend when their sport utility vehicle went into a ditch and rolled several times.
Franklin J. Pivonka, 41, and his 40-year-old wife, Yvonne E. Pivonka, were pronounced dead at the scene by authorities who found the bodies about 5:20 a.m. Monday in a heavily wooded area.
Family members said they believe the couple died overnight Saturday. They filed a missing persons report Sunday.
The accident occurred on southbound Highway 275 about two miles south of West Point.

(23,156 posts)Haven't they been standard equipment for some fifty years now? Don't most states have laws REQUIRING their use?
No insurance is somewhat easier to understand, without knowing anything at all about these people, but not using seat belts???
Not to mention SUVs are notoriously unstable and prone to rolling over, but I'm still flabbergasted at the no seat belts.

But, yeah, I'm sorry for their deaths and sorry for their kids.

I feel it for the kids but why on earth would they not be wearing seat belts.

(99,642 posts)I know seven kids that will probably remember to wear a belt every single time.

(37,364 posts)light vehicles. We have had a total of 6 kids betweeen two different communities die in accidents involving light vehicles in the last three days. Four in a John Deere Gator were hit by a truck running a stop sign at an intersection of a country road. Two died on private property when their ATV rolled over a steep embankment on a creek. Four 14-year olds and two pre-teens gone.
